HerHarmony: Women's Health Tracker

Inspiration

HerHarmony was inspired by our desire to make a positive impact in women’s health, a field often underserved and stigmatized. We noticed that most period-tracking apps primarily focused on cycle predictions but lacked holistic insights into health issues that may be connected to menstrual cycles, such as PCOS, endometriosis, and other conditions that affect women disproportionately. We wanted to create a tool that not only helps women track their cycles but also empowers them with predictive insights for their overall well-being.

What it Does

HerHarmony is a comprehensive health app designed to track menstrual cycles and predict potential symptoms of specific diseases. Beyond just period tracking, the app integrates a symptom prediction feature that uses health data to alert users to patterns that could indicate conditions such as hormone imbalances or reproductive health issues. HerHarmony also provides educational resources to help users understand their health and make informed decisions.

How We Built It

  1. Research and Requirements Gathering
We started by researching women’s health needs and consulting healthcare professionals to identify symptoms and patterns commonly associated with conditions impacting women’s reproductive health. This helped us define the features and scope of HerHarmony.

  2. Front-End Development
The app was built using React Native, allowing us to develop a seamless, cross-platform experience for both iOS and Android. We focused on creating a user-friendly, respectful interface that feels personal yet private.

  3. Back-End and Database
We set up a secure database using Firebase Database. Given the sensitivity of the data, we implemented strict privacy protocols and encrypted storage.

Challenges We Ran Into

  1. Data Privacy and Security
Since HerHarmony handles sensitive health data, ensuring data security and compliance with privacy regulations was a top priority. Deciding how we will handle this personal data was a big task, at the end we opted for full data security and allowing users to completely delete all stored data. Other than this we also blocked screenshot for additional safety.

  2. Building Accurate Predictive Models
Creating a reliable symptom prediction feature was challenging due to limited access to comprehensive women-specific health data. We carefully selected data sources and adjusted our algorithms to minimize biases and maximize accuracy.

  3. User Sensitivity and Accessibility
We wanted HerHarmony to be accessible and sensitive to users’ needs without causing alarm or confusion. Achieving this balance in health alerts and predictions required continuous feedback and iterative design improvements.

Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of

  • Empowering Women’s Health: HerHarmony is more than a period tracker—it’s a proactive tool for women’s health, contributing to a world where women have the resources they need to understand and advocate for their well-being.
  • Secure Data Handling: We prioritized data privacy and ensured that users’ sensitive health information is securely stored and protected.
  • Machine Learning Integration: Successfully developing a predictive model that provides accurate, actionable insights for users’ health is an accomplishment we’re proud of, considering the complexities involved.

What We Learned

Through HerHarmony, we learned about the importance of designing with empathy and sensitivity for health apps. We gained hands-on experience with app building, Gemini API, Firebase, data privacy protocols, the challenges of bias in healthcare AI, and the importance of delivering medical insights in a user-friendly way. The project also taught us the power of collaboration between technology and healthcare professionals to build tools that genuinely serve users' needs.

What's Next for HerHarmony

We have ambitious plans for the future of HerHarmony:

  • Enhanced Predictive Features: We aim to expand our predictive models to cover a broader range of conditions, including mental health factors that can correlate with menstrual health.
  • Pregnancy Support: We are committed to add support for women's in different stages of pregnancy, and also improve the predictor to tell when its better to avoid intercourse to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
  • Community and Support: Adding a community feature where users can connect with others and access guidance from health professionals.
  • Global Accessibility: Expanding HerHarmony’s availability in multiple languages to reach a wider, more diverse audience.

HerHarmony is committed to supporting women’s health with innovative, sensitive technology, and we’re excited about the journey ahead.
