Inspiration
The inspiration behind the Her Guard stems from the urgent need to enhance women's safety in public spaces. Many women face daily challenges when navigating environments, often feeling vulnerable to harassment and unsafe situations. The lack of a centralized, reliable platform to provide real-time safety information and support motivated the creation of this app. By leveraging technology, community input, and comprehensive safety features, the Her Guard App aims to empower women, offering them a sense of security and confidence as they move through public spaces.
What it does
The Her Guard App is a comprehensive tool for enhancing women's safety. Key features include real-time alerts for incidents of harassment or unsafe areas, user-generated community reviews of public spaces, a straightforward incident reporting system, and access to a repository of safety tips. It also offers quick access to emergency contacts, connects to ride-sharing services with female drivers via the Bolt API, provides safety ratings for public transportation based on community feedback, and integrates with Google Maps API for real-time tracking of locations and safe routes.
How we built it
To build the Her Guard App, a combination of modern technologies is used. The front-end is developed with React, utilizing its component-based architecture to create a dynamic and responsive user interface. The back-end employs Node.js and Express, providing a robust and scalable server environment for handling API requests and managing data flow. For map integration, the Google Maps API is incorporated to enable real-time tracking and display safe routes and zones. MySQL is used to manage user data, incident reports, and reviews, while Firebase Authentication ensures secure and efficient user sign-in and sign-up processes. Additionally, the Bolt API is integrated to connect users with safe ride-sharing options featuring female drivers.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges we faced during the development of the Her Guard App were, ensuring data accuracy is crucial for the reliability of user-generated content and real-time alerts. Scalability was another challenge, as the system must handle a large number of users and data without compromising performance. Privacy is a major concern, particularly with maintaining user privacy and data security for sensitive information like incident reports and location data. Additionally, seamlessly integrating various APIs and ensuring they work together harmoniously presents a significant technical challenge.

During the development of launching the Her Guard App, the accomplishments we achieved was the app empowering women by providing a reliable tool to enhance their safety and confidence in public spaces. It fosters community building by creating a supportive network where women can share experiences and support each other. The app raises awareness about the importance of women's safety and encourages proactive measures in public spaces. Additionally, it leverages cutting-edge technology to address a critical social issue effectively, showcasing technological innovation.
What we learned
Throughout the development process, lessons that we learned were emphasis on the importance of designing with the end-user in mind, ensuring the app is intuitive and meets their needs. Collaboration which highlights the value of working collaboratively with a team, integrating feedback, and continuously improving the product. Adaptability which taught us being flexible and adaptive to challenges and changes during the development process. Lastly, the impact of technology which demonstrates how technology can be harnessed to create meaningful social impact.
What's next for HerGuard
The Her Guard App is just the beginning of future plans which include extending the app's reach to more cities and regions, adding additional safety features such as integration with local law enforcement and real-time public transport tracking, and collaborating with local governments, NGOs, and businesses to enhance the app's capabilities and outreach. Additionally, providing educational resources and workshops will help women use the app effectively and stay safe. The journey of developing the Her Guard App was both challenging and rewarding, offering an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of women around the world.
