Here4Health Hackathon Story
Inspiration
Access to healthcare is still a big challenge around the world — especially in underserved communities. We were motivated to build Here4Health because we believe finding care shouldn’t be complicated. Our goal was to create an easy-to-use platform that helps people quickly find nearby clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies, and feel supported along their healthcare journey. We wanted to make taking care of your health a little bit easier and a lot more accessible.
What it does
"Here4Health" is a web-based application that puts local healthcare options right at your fingertips. Users can:
- See nearby clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies on an interactive map
- Filter services by specialties such as pediatrics, mental health, and more
- Get real-time directions and contact details
- Help keep the platform up-to-date by submitting updates if you spot missing or outdated info
How we built it
We built "Here4Health" using:
- Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript (with Leaflet.js for map rendering)
- Backend: Flask (Python) to serve location data
- Database: A SQLite database to store healthcare facilities
- APIs: OpenStreetMap and OpenCage Geocoder APIs for mapping and address handling
- Deployment: Hosted the frontend GitHub Pages; backend ran locally for demo purposes
Our main goal was to make the app feel fast and easy to use, whether you're on a phone or a computer.
Challenges we ran into
- Mapping Accuracy: Making sure markers aligned correctly with OpenStreetMap data was harder than expected, especially for small or rural facilities.
- Data collection: It was surprisingly tricky to find reliable lists of healthcare facilities due to patchy/inconsistent public records.
- Frontend integration: We had to find the sweet spot between a clean, polished design and keeping the app fast.
- User accounts debate: We considered adding logins for submitting updates but decided it would be too much to build in the hackathon time limit.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a polished, user-friendly platform that could truly help people in their communities.
- Successfully pulled together multiple APIs and databases into cohesive, real-time web app.
- Designed a full brand identity for "Here4Health" -- logo, colors, and all!
What we learned
- How to move quickly from idea to full-stack deployment.
- The challenges and importance of working with public mapping data.
- How important healthcare data accuracy is — even minor mistakes can have big consequences.
What's next for Here4Health
- Expand Database: Add more detailed healthcare service data, including reviews and service quality ratings.
- Mobile App: Build a version with offline support for areas with limited internet access.
- Crowdsourced Updates: Allow users to suggest new locations or corrections directly through the app.
- Partnerships: Collaborate with local health departments and NGOs to roll Here4Health out to the communities who need it most.
