Inspiration

My grandmother suffered from Alzheimer's Disease. She suffered from the effects of the disease even more than the disease itself. It makes people very different from what they are, they even forget themselves! They are pushed far away in a world, where they do not remember anyone at all. Then, I used to play small household games with her, and believe me or not, that was the only time i could see her smile. That smile of my grandmother, inspired me to bring smile on people's face, by easing of their pain and giving hope for cure to them. Any therapy does not need to be strenuous. With "Here V R" I promote keeping a broader view towards giving the patients the fun therapy that they need. Studies show that the engagement of patients in immersive and interactive virtual environments through VR effectively stimulates cognitive processes, fostering improvements that could have significant implications for medical intervention and patient care.

What it does

Helps senior people, especially with Cognitive Impairment, who are prone to diseases like Alzheimer's, to assess and improve the cognition levels.

How I built it

The cognition assessment is done on the basis of Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Prior training and certification achieved in order to administer and score the patients with MoCA. As per MoCA, a lesser score indicates Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The data stats collected, are assessed in the gameplay by AI-powered Algorithm, after which the respective Healthcare Provider gets real-time insights on their VR-powered dashboards where they can track and suggest changes to the games for the player, and also the player and its family gets personalized updates on the assessments and progress. I focus on games with "Memory and Attention" domains of the cognition here for presenting the project. Games such as "Memory Garden", "Puzzle solving", "Real-life inspired activities like shopping, finances". Aim to incorporate games with other cognitive domains in the future. The gameplay mechanics use different levels/difficulties as per the assessment of the player. We use visual cues like color changes, animations, or sound effects to provide immediate feedback on player actions. Immediate response of "correct" "incorrect" is also available. Tried out @unity and @spaceXR for first time, made the trailer with @canva.

Challenges I ran into

Lack of tech support

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Reaching this level to be able to submit my project through is the greatest achievement in itself.

What I learned

Never give up!

What's next for Here V R

  • Would incorporate MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination), Clinical Dementia Rating Scale and other valid scales to combine and give best and accurate assessments.
  • Incorporate AI-ML algorithms for better feedback response. Also, incorporate the "memory palace" technique. Make the experience more real, immersive and multisensory simulating.
  • With more research with VR, want to make it a sure shot option for patient care.
