Inspiration
Location & Time sharing are already basic abilities on all major platforms like Facebook & Instagram, but for example time isn't available in realtime for videos & I wanted to improve on the aesthetics as well. Vaporwave aesthetics were definitely an influence on this effect, as well as the need for more mindfulness in our modern times.
What it does
The effect starts by placing a 3D Text Object with the text "Here & Now" once it recognizes a plane. After a few seconds the users city and local time slides into place of the prior 3D Text object. All objects react to the device movement of the user with a slight delay.
How I built it
With Spark AR only.
Challenges I ran into
I wasn't sure of how much user input I should put into the effect: Should the effect start on tap? Should the user be able to be able to move the AR Object around? In the end, I decided to go with the least amount of friction.
3D Text Objects are only available if building for Facebook, which took a bit of Googling to find out.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The smooth sliding of Location & Time into the screen. The reactivity of the AR Object with the devices rotation. The whole feel of the effect. Simple and yet aesthetically pleasing.
What I learned
How to use device motion to make 3D objects more reactive to user behaviour. Different triggers like measuring runtime to run timed events.
What's next for Here & Now
Higher focus on mindfulness and being in present.
Allowing for more user input.
