Inspiration

This was what inspired us to create HerCycle, spotting the significant gap left in comprehensive digital health solutions for women. Period tracking apps were focused narrowly on dates and basic symptoms, giving no light on a more holistic life of women. We realized that existing solutions were not efficiently addressing the complex interconnections between menstrual health, emotional well-being, and overall life quality. This understanding along with the scope of AI technology in providing a personalized support environment motivated us to develop a solution that is holistic. We considered developing a solution that could provide both tracking abilities and a learned companion in one's health journey, providing education, emotional support, and personalized insight through advanced integration of AI capabilities.

What it does

HerCycle is a comprehensive health management application that encompasses all the critical features into a seamless system. Primarily, the application is based on providing cycle tracking and predictions to its users with comprehensive details of menstrual patterns and windows of fertility with smart reminders and calendar integration. The health and wellness monitoring component of the application tracks a wide variety of physical symptoms, emotional states, sleep patterns, and nutrition habits, and the data is presented in intuitive visualizations. Our AI Health Assistant, powered by the Gemini API, provides health-related information and personalized recommendations, available 24/7. It responds instantaneously to all user queries, and the educational hub contains a collection of relevant articles, videos, and evidence-based medical information regularly updated to make sure users have access to the latest knowledge in health. Additionally, a personal journal function allows for private emotional tracking and thought documentation. It comes built with pattern analysis for mood and symptoms.

How we built it

When creating HerCycle, our main concern was that we wanted it to be strong, user-friendly, and reliable. We would, therefore, deploy the application's frontend in using React.js along with the deployment of Tailwind CSS in a responsive manner, Framer Motion in smooth animation for the UX and React Icons to ensure a homogeneous visual expression for the system, and also by integrating AI within the process- such as implementing the Gemini API and further developing capabilities such as natural language processing capabilities. We were focused on user interface design with an intuitive and accessible experience on all device sizes, including dark/light mode functionality and interactive data visualization components.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout development, we encountered various significant challenges. The AI integration proved complex, requiring careful attention to ensure accurate responses while managing API rate limits and implementing proper error handling. Data privacy emerged as a crucial concern, necessitating robust security measures for storing and managing sensitive health information. Creating an intuitive user experience while maintaining feature richness presented another challenge, as did technical aspects such as state management, performance optimization, and ensuring cross-browser compatibility. These challenges pushed us to innovate and implement more sophisticated solutions than initially planned.

Accomplishments

We were able to develop and deliver a comprehensive health tracking system that integrated AI capabilities transparently for personalized insights. We developed an intuitive, accessible user interface that effectively handles secure data management while maintaining scalability for educational resources. The platform also achieved excellent cross-device compatibility, without any compromise in feature functionality or user experience. All these are significant achievements towards the vision of developing a truly helpful women's health companion.

What we learned

The development process provided valuable insights into advanced React.js state management techniques, AI integration best practices, and healthcare data privacy requirements. We gained deep understanding of user experience design principles, performance optimization strategies, and the crucial importance of accessible design. The project also taught us complex state management patterns and the delicate balance between feature richness and usability.

What's next for HerCycle:

Further on the horizon, HerCycle will expand to integrate wearables, develop advanced data analytics, and maintain a professional resource network for access to medical providers. The product will include various technical upgrades through the implementation of a cloud-based database, adding security features and optimizing performance. New user experience is planned through improved customization, expanded accessibility, wider language support, and community-building features. In doing so, we further pursue our goal in supporting the all-around management of women's health.
