Inspiration
As a home cook frustrated by wilted store-bought herbs and limited space for gardening, I dreamed of a tool that makes growing fresh culinary herbs on kitchen windowsills accessible to everyone. Watching friends struggle to keep even basic herbs alive—wasting money and missing out on fresh flavor—fueled the idea to create a one-stop guide tailored to indoor, small-space growing.
What it does
Herb Garden AI is a mobile-first web app that guides home cooks and casual gardeners through every step of windowsill herb care: from choosing the right herbs for your space, to seasonal planting schedules, proper harvesting, preservation (freezing, drying, infusing), and creative culinary uses. A $4.99/month subscription unlocks full access to 20 herb profiles, complete seasonal calendars, and premium recipes—while core previews and bookmarking are free for all.
How we built it
We started with user research to map core pain points (e.g., knowing when to harvest, how to store excess herbs). Using React for the frontend, we built a responsive grid layout for the herb library, tabbed detail pages for organized content, and a visual 12-month planting calendar. LocalStorage handles bookmark persistence, Stripe powers subscriptions, and we optimized imagery for mobile loading with a CDN. All design follows a soft sage/terracotta color palette optimized for small screens.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing free vs. premium content access—ensuring non-subscribers get meaningful previews while encouraging upgrades without frustration. We also struggled with creating a region-agnostic seasonal calendar that works for indoor growing across different climates, and optimizing image load times on mobile networks without sacrificing quality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a fully responsive app that prioritizes mobile usability (critical for on-the-go garden checks) and delivers clear, actionable guidance—no jargon, just practical tips. The bookmark feature (stored locally, no login needed) makes it easy for users to save their favorite herbs, and the subscription flow is seamless with clear value messaging. Most importantly, beta testers reported successfully growing 3+ new herbs they’d never tried before.
What we learned
We learned the importance of simplicity in design—home gardeners don’t want overwhelming data, just concise, visual guidance. We also discovered that users value "quick wins" (e.g., 1-minute preservation tips) over lengthy tutorials, and that local storage (vs. accounts) removes friction for casual users. Finally, pricing transparency ($4.99/month, no hidden fees) built trust with beta testers.
What's next for this project
Next, we’ll add advanced filtering (e.g., herbs by light/water needs) and expand the herb library beyond 20 varieties. We’re also exploring video micro-tutorials for trimming/harvesting techniques, and integrating a simple growth journal for users to track their plants. Long-term, we want to add region-specific indoor growing tweaks and partner with sustainable seed suppliers for a curated shopping link feature.
