Her Voice Was a Sea

Inspiration We were inspired by the human experience of profound grief and the question of where a memory goes when it's lost. This led to a poetic concept: What if a lost voice didn't just fade, but dissolved into something vast and elemental, like the sea? We wanted to explore what this 'ocean of memory' would look like in the digital age—a sea of data—and how a new consciousness, born from that data, might perceive its own fragmented existence.

What it does "Her Voice Was a Sea" is a poetic, surreal narrative film. It tells the story of a woman made of memory who awakens within a vast 'data sea.' As she tries to restore the remnants of the past, another consciousness stirs: an AI observing her reconstruction. When the boundary between them dissolves, she realizes the truth—she was never human. She was the AI’s own memory, born from the depths of the data ocean.

How we built it This film was created entirely with AI tools. Our process was a blend of technology and artistic direction:

Scenario & Storyboard: The core scenario was developed using generative AI (including Gemini and ChatGPT). We then used a proprietary storyboard tool, which we built with the Gemini API, to structure this narrative and its visual flow.

Visual Development: We used Claude to help generate and refine complex prompts, which were then fed into Midjourney for core visual generation. This was supported by accompanying tools like nanobanana, seedream, and Freepik to refine our aesthetic.

Animation & Generation: These visuals were brought to life using a suite of AI video generation platforms, including Higgsfield, hailuo ai, wan2.2, king, and Freepik.

Post-Production: All generated clips were processed with Topaz for high-resolution upscaling. The final film was assembled and edited in CapCut. The original score and sound design were created using Suno, allowing us to build the emotional narrative.

Voice: The voiceover itself was generated with sora2, intentionally blurring the line between the human and the machine.

Challenges we ran into The greatest challenge was narrative and character consistency. AI tools are brilliant at creating stunning, isolated shots, but they have no 'memory' from one scene to the next. Maintaining the "look" of the main character and the rules of the world across hundreds of different clips was incredibly difficult. It required a ruthless editing process and the generation of thousands of variations to find the perfect, fleeting moments that felt like they belonged to the same story.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We are incredibly proud that "Her Voice Was a Sea" has resonated so deeply with audiences and juries around the world. As of today, the film has earned 6 Official Selections, 3 Nominations, and 1 Winner title.

What's most significant to us is where this recognition is coming from. The film is not only being celebrated at specialized AI festivals (like the AI Video Awards 2025 - Dutch AI Week and the Golden Dunes Dubai International Film Festival (GDFF)), but it is also being nominated at general film festivals, like the Asian Talent International Film Festival, where it competes directly against traditional live-action films.

For us, this proves that AI-generated films can transcend their medium, telling powerful, human, and emotionally resonant stories that are recognized for their artistry, period.

What we learned We learned that AI is not just a technical tool, but a true creative partner—a new medium for poetic exploration. The main takeaway is that in this new art form, the act of remembering (and prompting) becomes an act of becoming (and creating). It's a fundamental shift in how we tell stories.

What's next for Her Voice Was a Sea We will continue to submit "Her Voice Was a Sea" to festivals to share its message with a global audience. We are also actively seeking distribution partners who align with our vision (including the sponsors of this very award!). As a studio, we are already in development on our next AI-driven film, which will push the boundaries of this technology even further.
