Inspiration

While many freedom fighters of India's independence movement are celebrated, the stories of countless women revolutionaries remain unheard—lost in the margins of textbooks and memory. This project was born from the desire to uncover those hidden voices, to spotlight their courage, and to bring their resistance to life in a deeply human, digital form.

We were inspired by letters, memoirs, and oral stories passed down generations—powerful narratives from women like Uda Devi, Matangini Hazra, Rani Gaidinliu, and Begum Rokeya. Their sacrifices were real. Their words deserved to be heard.

What it does

Her Letters is a storytelling-driven, fully responsive website that brings to light the forgotten stories of Indian women freedom fighters (1857–1947) and beyond. It features:

A scrollable historical timeline of key events with AI voice narration.

Interactive biographies of unsung women revolutionaries.

Digitally styled “Letters of Resistance” with TTS.

An impact map of women-led actions across India.

A learn-and-quiz module for educational engagement.

A community submission page to collect untold local stories.

It transforms raw history into a digital experience that is personal, emotional, and educational.

How we built it

I built Her Letters entirely on my own using Bolt.new, combining my skills in web development, historical research, and user experience design. Here's how I approached it:

Frontend: I used HTML, Tailwind CSS, and JavaScript to build a clean, responsive layout. Tailwind helped me maintain design consistency with the specified color palette (#3B82F6, white, black, and grey).

Voice Narration: I integrated the Web Speech API to enable AI-generated voice narration for every story and letter. This feature brings emotional depth and accessibility to the experience.

Mobile-First Design: I ensured the entire website is fully responsive and accessible on all screen sizes, from desktops to smartphones.

Content Management: I curated each woman’s biography and story from reliable archives, building out timelines, letters, and quiz content manually.

Interactivity: I added features like modal pop-ups, quizzes, an impact map, and a community story submission form using vanilla JavaScript and local storage for data handling.

Building everything solo helped me refine my skills in design thinking, full-stack web development, and historical storytelling—all within the framework and constraints of the hackathon.

Challenges we ran into

Data Scarcity: Finding verified and complete stories of many women was difficult, requiring cross-checking fragmented resources.

No Animation Rule: We had to rely on layout, content, and typography alone to deliver emotional impact without motion or effects.

TTS Integration: Voice support across browsers was inconsistent at first, and optimizing for pronunciation and clarity took time.

Design Balance: We wanted the site to feel historical yet modern, minimal yet rich—achieving that balance took multiple design iterations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We gave voice—literally and figuratively—to women freedom fighters who have been overlooked for decades.

Built a feature-complete, responsive, and accessible site under tight constraints (no animations, limited colors).

Created a seamless experience with working AI voice narration across every major story and letter.

Integrated community engagement through the Share Her Story form, encouraging users to contribute to living history.

What we learned

Storytelling is powerful when backed by technology. Empathy and code can go hand in hand.

We learned to work under creative restrictions (no animations, strict palette) and still create a compelling product.

Improved skills in voice API integration, responsive design, and accessibility-first thinking.

Gained deeper appreciation for history research and the responsibility it carries when spotlighting marginalized voices.

What's next for Her Letters

Expand the database to include more regional stories from India's northeast, tribal belts, and South Asia.

Add multilingual support for native language versions of letters and bios.

Migrate to a backend with cloud storage for submitted stories and analytics.

Launch as a progressive web app (PWA) for offline viewing and classroom use.

Introduce AI-generated letters based on historical context for deeper immersion (clearly labeled as fictional).

Collaborate with educators to integrate this into history curricula and empower students to explore local heroes.
