Our Journey with Her Health

Inspiration

In rural areas, healthcare challenges often go beyond limited resources—they are exacerbated by isolation, stigma around health issues, and a lack of timely support. For countless women in these regions, health problems can go untreated for years, often due to a lack of accessible, trusted information or direct support from healthcare professionals. Our team recognized that a comprehensive solution would need to tackle these challenges holistically, connecting women directly with local healthcare centers and compassionate donors. This inspired us to create a digital platform that brings together women, healthcare centers, and donors to build a connected ecosystem of health support. Our vision is that through this network, women in rural areas will have easier access to preventive care, diagnosis, and a pathway to reach out for help when they need it most.

What We Learned

Throughout this journey, we dove into the complexities of rural healthcare and how technology can bridge significant gaps. We learned how to build with empathy and respect for users who might be less familiar with digital platforms, yet in great need of their benefits. Implementing Firebase for real-time interaction required a thoughtful approach to data structuring and handling, particularly when managing sensitive health data. Working with the Google Gemini API was also a learning experience, as it allowed us to build a chatbot that responds in an accessible yet medically accurate way. In doing so, we gained hands-on experience in prompting and refining AI-driven responses to handle healthcare conversations with care. We also learned the importance of designing user-friendly, low-bandwidth applications for rural settings, ensuring accessibility and real-time functionality in resource-limited environments.

How We Built Our Project

Our project centers on a mobile app that uses React Native to provide a cross-platform, accessible experience for rural women. The application is designed with three primary sections:

Women: This section offers symptom tracking, medication reminders, and menstrual cycle monitoring, all tailored to give women accurate insights into their health. A chatbot powered by Google’s Gemini API serves as an early-detection tool, offering AI-driven insights and answers based on the health data provided. Our aim is to empower women with access to information about their bodies and provide them with the confidence to seek further assistance when necessary.
Healthcare Centers: This section provides local healthcare providers with tools to monitor the health profiles of women in their area. By flagging severe cases based on symptom tracking, healthcare centers are alerted early and can reach out proactively to those most at risk. They also have a platform to verify medical needs and request funds for their patients, fostering community-supported care.
Donors: Our platform’s donor page creates a transparent fundraising channel where donors can view real-time details about women in need, verified by local healthcare providers. The transparency of our platform reassures donors, showing them exactly how their contributions are being utilized.

The app utilizes Firebase for its real-time database capabilities, allowing secure storage and dynamic updates of user health profiles, chat history, and more. To provide context-specific responses, the chatbot integrates users’ data to deliver personalized assistance, which is particularly beneficial for health-related conversations. The website counterpart of the app, still under development, will eventually serve as a complementary platform for healthcare centers and donors to interact and manage their activities.

Challenges We Faced

Data Sensitivity and Security: Dealing with sensitive health data was a primary concern. Ensuring robust security and privacy within Firebase while designing secure access protocols required careful planning.
Creating a Responsive, Empathetic Chatbot: Our chatbot needed to be medically accurate but also empathic, specifically tailored to women’s health needs. Achieving a balance between direct medical information and a supportive tone required extensive testing and prompt refinement.
Ensuring Accessibility for Rural Users: Designing an application for users in rural areas, who may have limited or intermittent internet access, presented unique challenges. We focused on building a lightweight app with caching strategies to minimize data usage and ensure usability, even under challenging conditions.
Intuitive Design for First-Time Users: Simplifying the user interface for those less familiar with digital tools required multiple iterations. We prioritized an intuitive design that allows users to navigate the app seamlessly and encourages ease of use for women who may be using a digital health tool for the first time.

As we continue to develop our platform, our vision remains clear: to empower women with the tools and support they need to live healthier, safer lives, while also involving healthcare providers and a global community of donors. Our journey has just begun, and we’re excited to see this platform make a lasting impact on the lives of women in rural areas.
