Inspiration

We are students and often find that we ignore our health issues due to our busy schedules, academic stress, and lack of proper guidance. Balancing coursework, extracurricular activities, and personal life can make it difficult to prioritize wellness. Many of us skip meals, rely on unhealthy fast food, or neglect exercise and proper sleep, leading to fatigue, poor concentration, and long-term health concerns.

We wanted to create a personalized health and wellness tracker that makes it easier for students and individuals to take control of their well-being. By providing customized meal plans, nutritional insights, and health recommendations, our platform encourages users to build sustainable, healthy habits without disrupting their daily routines. Our goal is to make well-being accessible, simple, and tailored to each individual's needs.

What it does

Our platform is a personalized health and wellness tracker that helps users take better care of their well-being by providing customized meal plans, nutritional insights, and health recommendations based on their individual needs.

Key Features Personalized Meal Plans – Generates daily meal plans based on dietary preferences, allergies, health conditions, and wellness goals. Nutritional Insights – Provides information on essential nutrients and how they contribute to overall health, ensuring a well-balanced diet. Health Condition Adaptation – Adjusts recommendations for users with specific health concerns such as diabetes, hypertension, or digestive issues. ** Smart Food Avoidance** – Alerts users about foods that should be avoided based on their allergies or medical conditions. Weekly Health Tips – Offers habit-forming wellness advice to encourage long-term health improvements. User-Friendly Experience – Simple questionnaire-based input and easy-to-follow meal suggestions make health tracking effortless for busy individuals.

By using AI-driven recommendations, our platform makes staying healthy easy and personalized, ensuring that users can focus on their daily lives while improving their well-being.

How we built it

We developed our platform using a full-stack approach, combining React for the frontend, Node.js for the backend, and integrating Gemini AI to generate personalized health and wellness recommendations.

Tech Stack Frontend: Built with React, JavaScript, and Bootstrap for a responsive and user-friendly UI. Backend: Developed with Node.js and Express.js to handle user data, API calls, and AI-generated responses. Database: Stores user profiles and preferences to generate personalized meal plans. AI Integration: Uses Gemini AI API to process user data and provide customized meal plans, health advice, and emotional support.

Challenges we ran into

AI Integration & Response Handling Challenge: AI sometimes returned incomplete or unstructured JSON outputs, making meal plan generation inconsistent. Solution: We implemented error handling and created a fallback system to ensure users always receive a valid meal plan. Frontend & Backend Synchronization Challenge: Managing API calls between React (frontend) and Node.js (backend) while handling asynchronous requests and CORS errors. Solution: We optimized data flow, implemented proper state management, and used middleware to handle API requests smoothly. Time Constraints as Students Challenge: Balancing coursework, exams, and project deadlines while working on a complex AI-powered platform. Solution: We divided tasks efficiently, set clear milestones, and used version control (GitHub) to collaborate effectively. User Experience & Accessibility Challenge: Ensuring a simple yet effective UI/UX that allows users to navigate easily and understand AI-generated meal plans. Solution: We refined our UI, tested with different users, and made iterative improvements for better usability.

What we learned

AI Integration & Prompt Engineering – Fine-tuning AI prompts, handling JSON outputs, and implementing error handling. Full-Stack Development – Building a React frontend with a Node.js/Express backend, optimizing API communication. Debugging & Problem-Solving – Fixing async issues, API errors, and improving system reliability. Team Collaboration & Time Management – Efficient task division, GitHub version control, and balancing academics with project work. User Experience & Accessibility – Designing an intuitive UI and ensuring clear, personalized health recommendations.

What's next for HenCare

The next step of HenCare will be improve Gemini AI’s accuracy in meal planning and health recommendations, add a dashboard for users to track health improvements over time, introduce a forum or chatbot for user discussions and expert consultations, develop a mobile-friendly version for on-the-go access to health insights, adding features for example connect to apple watch to monitor user's health in real time.
