Inspiration
We've always loved fantasy games and seeing the theme of wizards and spell we definitely had to. We know how popular wizards are because of yknow.. Harry Potter?? So with one teamate playing survivor.io, another one finally watching all Harry Potter movies, and one along for the ride we had to take our chance at something extrodinary.
What it does
What Little Mage does aims to bring satisfaction, dopamine, and the feeling of power. You fight waves of enemies with you and your wand and by gathering better gear, spells, and increasing your power, you keep striving to climb to the top destroying every boss on the way. It's a relaxing game meant to let players enjoy some time and play as a mage they've dreamed to be.
How we built it
We build Little Mage mainly through Unreal Engine 5, but of course a game isn't a game without its beauty. Aesprite and FLStudio brought the charm and fun of a 2.5D video game to life.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was using Git. Especially in a game coded environment and dealing with assets it took a few hours from this competition. Another challenge (but a fun one) was using Unreal Engine. We all were very new to this, and with minimal time against us, we were PACING.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were pretty proud of being able to make a 2.5D game in time to give off a demo. We're not game makers so its rare for us to do something like this.
What we learned
We learned a lot of Unreal Engine and got a lot more comfortabale with Git. Something about Unreal Engine that is super great for starting is visual blueprints. It makes the whole developing system so much faster and there are so many tools to aid your experience.
What's next for Little Mage
What's next for Little Mage ahead is quite a lot... Little Mage has growing to do with adding many features to collect items from dropped enemies, boss battles, more spells!, and even a world that fits him just right. Free models were used due to pressed time but with an event like this, even the basics would have to be refined at some point.
