Heltke is a platform that provides quick, convenient and easy access to quality healthcare, consultation, up-to-date information on COVID-19 cases and isolation/prevention tips.

Inspiration

Healthcare is a major challenge in many parts of the world, especially in Africa. Access healthcare has been a challenge to so many and this has resulted in so many (permanent) disabilities or casualties. This is due to so many factors which include but not limited to the high cost of healthcare, lack of timely access to healthcare and the quality of healthcare received. I have thought of a service that aims to eliminate or reduce these barriers towards providing a solution that is affordable and isn't restricted to physical movements/constraints.

What it does

Heltke is a simple mobile platform where healthcare seekers get connected with professional and duly registered healthcare practitioners at a very affordable rate by both parties. With the platform, users can also submit questions/inquiries on common health topics/challenges in general and specifically concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and get answers from available professionals. The healthcare seekers also receive daily health tips that help them have a healthy living and ease self-isolation. Also, an up-to-date news view is available, this helps users keep abreast of the latest events/happenings in their immediate environment as a priority and then important world health news.

In relation to the recent/ongoing global pandemic of the CoronaVirus (COVID-19/SARS-COV2), the platform gathers updated statistics on various categories of cases recorded every minute (with Nigeria as a case study). This report presents the number of Total cases, Total deaths, Active Cases, New Cases, New Deaths and Total Recoveries.

How I built it

Due to the importance, urgency and expected a wide range of usage of this solution, I built it using the Flutter hybrid mobile framework (based on the Dart Programming language). Development parts were in modules and sub-tasks, starting from the splash screen, authentication pages (registration and login), home view, news view...

Challenges I ran into

Some few challenges I encountered include; low number of feedback on surveys given to prospective users and medical practitioners to gather their thoughts and views about the platform. Others include access to regular power for further development.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

As much as there are a lot, some key accomplishments I'm proud of are; designing and integrating a welcoming splash screen, fetching updated statistics about the COVID-19 pandemic, fetching update news stories and showing their relevant content.

What I learned

During the development fo this platform, I learnt how API calls are made in Flutter, how data can be passed between views and how Webpage content can be displayed within the application.

What's next for Heltke

I strongly believe this solution will help to curtail the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic by developing a solution that helps in reporting and preventing it's spread. Other features to be developed include a feature where users can submit questions and symptoms they're having and this would help them know if they have the virus or not and how mild, moderate, severe or critical it is if they do have it. And also a button to send quick (SMS) alert to the respective CDC hotlines.
