Inspiration

The idea for Helpora was born out of the urgent need for a platform where people seeking part-time work, especially those in need of extra income like students, the elderly, or individuals with health challenges, could easily find opportunities. We were inspired by the struggle many face in searching for trustworthy, local, and short-term jobs, combined with the desire to offer a solution for individuals who want help with everyday tasks but lack an easy way to connect with reliable workers.

What it does

Helpora connects job posters and job seekers for domestic tasks. Job posters can upload various chores, such as moving furniture or teaching older adults how to use technology. Applicants can apply, and their ID proof is visible to job posters for authenticity checks. In return, job posters can assign humanity points to applicants based on their performance and behavior. These points help build trust in future job applications. The app ensures transparency, reliability, and safety, creating a LinkedIn-like profile but focused on domestic work.

How we built it

We built Helpora using Flutter for the app's front-end, providing a smooth, cross-platform user experience. The backend is powered by Firebase, managing user authentication, job postings, and data storage. Firestore is used for real-time syncing of job data, and Firebase Authentication ensures secure user verification. The app's architecture was designed to offer seamless scalability and easy updates as new features are added.

Challenges we ran into

We faced several challenges during the development of Helpora, including:

  1. User verification: Ensuring the safety and trustworthiness of both job posters and job seekers was critical. Creating a process for uploading and displaying ID proof in a secure yet user-friendly manner was complex.
  2. Scalability: Balancing real-time data updates while managing large volumes of job postings required thoughtful database structuring and optimization.
  3. UI/UX Design: Designing an interface that’s easy to use for a wide range of users, from elderly individuals to students, was a balancing act between simplicity and functionality.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have created a platform that can genuinely make a difference for people who need immediate, trustworthy help or are in need of quick earnings. Building Helpora with a focus on community trust—through features like humanity points, which reward positive behavior and build a reputation over time, and ID proof verification—ensures a safe, supportive environment for all users. Additionally, we’re proud of our app's inclusive design, which is accessible to people from diverse backgrounds and tech experience levels. Humanity points help foster accountability and trust among users, making it easier for job posters to find reliable help and for applicants to showcase their integrity and commitment.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned a great deal about building user-centric applications and the importance of trust in digital platforms. We deepened our understanding of Firebase and how to optimize databases for real-time updates. The process also reinforced the value of creating apps that directly address societal needs and provide opportunities for those who may struggle to find traditional jobs.

What's next for Helpora

The next steps for Helpora include expanding its features to cover a wider range of tasks and locations. We plan to:

  1. Introduce in-app messaging for better communication between job posters and applicants.
  2. Implement reviews and feedback to further build trust and reliability. 3.Add map directions integration, enabling job posters to easily provide exact locations and helping applicants navigate directly to the job site using in-app mapping tools.
  3. Expand to more regions to help people in areas with fewer part-time job opportunities.
  4. Offer more customization for jobs, such as allowing users to set availability, distance, and skill sets.
