Inspiration

In times of crisis, volunteers are often the backbone of relief efforts. We were inspired by the overwhelming need to quickly mobilize resources and volunteers in response to natural disasters, especially with the increasing impact of climate change. The rapid technological advancements in communication made us realize we could harness this to create a platform that connects volunteers and relief organizations in real-time.

What it does

HelpNow is a volunteer-driven platform that connects people with immediate opportunities to assist in disaster relief efforts around the world. Whether it’s coordinating food drives, assisting in flood relief, or rebuilding homes after a wildfire, HelpNow provides real-time updates on where help is needed and allows volunteers to register and offer their support on the spot.

How we built it

We built HelpNow using a React front-end, integrated with a Flask back-end to dynamically display event data. The data is stored and managed in a JSON format, allowing us to quickly update and display new disaster relief opportunities as they arise.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was implementing real-time updates for ongoing relief efforts and ensuring that volunteers receive timely information without overwhelming them with notifications.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We are proud of creating a platform that could potentially save lives by mobilizing volunteers quickly in times of disaster. Building an intuitive user interface that ensures volunteers can easily register and understand where their help is needed was another significant achievement.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how crucial it is to maintain proper data flow between the front-end and back-end, especially when dealing with real-time information. What’s next for HelpNow

Our next step is to integrate machine learning algorithms that predict where future disasters might occur based on climate patterns, allowing us to preemptively prepare and mobilize resources. We also aim to partner with more local and international organizations to expand the reach of HelpNow, ensuring that we can respond to crises more effectively.
