Inspiration

The inspiration for HerFuturePath Journey arises from the need to empower young women with clear, actionable career guidance in STEM. Recognizing the gender gap and the lack of relatable role models in STEM fields, I wanted to create a platform that doesn’t just show career paths but actively supports users by identifying key skills they need to succeed. By focusing on skill-building, gap analysis, and real-world role models, HerFuturePath Journey aims to motivate young women to pursue their ambitions in STEM with confidence.

What it does

HerFuturePath Journey is a unique career exploration and development platform tailored for young women in STEM. It’s designed to guide users on their career journey with a comprehensive, step-by-step approach:

  1. Career Pathway Guidance: Based on the user’s chosen STEM field, HerFuturePath Journey provides a detailed breakdown of essential skills and competencies, helping users understand what’s needed to start a successful career.
  2. Skill Gap Analysis: Users can input their current skills, and HerFuturePath Journey analyzes these against the requirements of their desired STEM field, highlighting areas for improvement and suggesting practical ways to bridge these gaps.
  3. Inspiring Role Models: Users can explore profiles of accomplished women in STEM, learning about their journeys, the challenges they overcame, and the critical skills that helped them succeed. These role models serve as both practical guides and sources of inspiration.

How we built it

HerFuturePath Journey was built using a combination of Python for backend processing and a locally hosted LLM to support interactive, personalized responses. I implemented functionalities to store user data, career information, and skill mappings. Extensive research was conducted to accurately represent diverse STEM career paths and provide meaningful, evidence-based skill gap analysis. Role model profiles were curated from verified stories of women in STEM, emphasizing their struggles, achievements, and unique contributions to inspire users.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Data Accuracy and Relevance: Ensuring the skills listed for each STEM career were up-to-date and represented the real demands of the industry was a significant challenge.
  2. Skill Gap Analysis Precision: Designing a skill gap analysis feature that provides accurate, personalized insights was complex, particularly to make recommendations both comprehensive and achievable.
  3. Role Model Diversity: Sourcing and curating diverse role models across various STEM fields to ensure inclusivity and relatability for users.
  4. Fun part: Tuning the LLM to respond to the STEM field "Environment Science" to list key skills as Pollution analyst, waste water management instead of plant, stem, flowers. Tuning was done by crafitng different prompts.

Role Model Library: Successfully curating a collection of diverse, inspiring female role models in STEM, each with a unique story that highlights resilience, innovation, and real-world problem-solving. 3.Effective Skill Gap Analysis: Building a feature that doesn’t just tell users their gaps but gives them actionable recommendations, creating a truly personalized experience.
  3. Comprehensive Career Path Mapping: I am proud of creating a tool that goes beyond general advice, giving specific insights on how to build a meaningful, successful STEM career.

What I learned

User-Centric Design: Through testing, I learned how important it is for HerFuturePath Journey to provide content that is both accessible and inspiring, particularly for younger users just starting their exploration. Skill Mapping Techniques: I gained valuable experience in translating real-world job requirements into effective skill-building pathways. The Power of Storytelling: Through building the role model library, I learned the impact of personal stories and how they help users connect with their career goals on a deeper level.

What's next for HerFuturePath Journey

Interactive STEM Challenges: Developing skill-based challenges that allow users to test and strengthen their STEM skills, earning badges or certificates for achievements. Enhanced Career Tracking: Allowing users to set and track their career goals, with reminders and updates on relevant skills and opportunities that align with their progression.
