Inspiration
Most navigation problems in unfamiliar spaces resolve into three challenges: find the current location, find the way to a destination, and find and maintain orientation. When they visit unfamiliar spaces, they first need a sighted guide in order to learn and familiarize themselves with the spaces, rather than use landmarks to find location and orientation.
What it does
HelpingEyes.tech leverages the power of MappedIn's advanced indoor navigation, offering a transformative app for the visually impaired. Volunteers connect via video calls to guide users seamlessly through indoor spaces, providing real-time assistance and fostering independence.
How we built it
HelpingEyes.tech seamlessly integrates MappedIn's SDK with the power of React and Next.js. This dynamic combination enables us to deliver a user-centric indoor navigation experience for the visually impaired.
Challenges we ran into
One of our primary challenges was achieving real-time location updates within MappedIn's indoor navigation. Ensuring accurate and timely positioning demanded intricate solutions to synchronize the user's movements seamlessly with the map. Additionally, incorporating a live camera feature posed complexities in integrating real-time video communication while maintaining system stability.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We take pride in seamlessly integrating live video chat into HelpingEyes.tech, providing real-time assistance through a user-friendly interface. Additionally, achieving optimal route planning by finding the shortest path on the map showcases our commitment to enhancing efficiency and accessibility.
What we learned
Working with MappedIn enlightened us on the potential of advanced indoor mapping in accessibility solutions. The project deepened our understanding of incorporating third-party technologies and reinforced the importance of user-centered design in creating impactful applications.
What's next for HelpingEyes.tech
Our future endeavors include implementing a robust authentication system to verify and onboard volunteers, ensuring a secure and trustworthy experience for users. Additionally, we plan to introduce a rating and review system, allowing users to provide feedback on volunteer assistance.
