Inspiration

Have you ever wanted to give back to your community but didn't know where to start? Or maybe you needed help with a project and couldn't find the right volunteers? That's where the Helping Hands Network comes in! I was inspired by the desire to have a platform that makes it easy for people to discover impact events, connect, and make a difference.

Helping Hands Network is a web app that connects volunteers with organizers who need help. Volunteers can browse through a variety of events based on their interests and skills, while organizers can easily post new projects and manage their volunteer applications.

How I built it

I took a cutting-edge approach to building the Helping Hands Network, focusing on both performance and user experience. For the frontend, I combined the power of Next.js 14, a modern React framework, with Tailwind CSS and Shadcn to make the beautiful UI. This combination allowed me to create a fast, responsive, and visually appealing website that users will love.

On the backend, I leveraged the all-new server actions feature of Next.js 14 for efficient API handling. Additionally, I used PostgreSQL along with Prisma, a powerful ORM (Object-Relational Mapper), to ensure seamless data storage and management of events, users, and registration information. This tech stack ensures scalability, maintainability, and a secure foundation for this platform.

Challenges we ran into

Building a platform that is both user-friendly and secure can be challenging. I had to make sure that our website was easy to navigate for everyone, regardless of their technical skills.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

I have seen countless volunteers, having motivation but no resources about events. I am proud to have created a platform that will make a positive impact on our community.

What I learned

Building a successful project requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. I learned a lot about web development, project management, and the importance of building a strong community around our project.

What's next for the Helping Hands Network

I have big plans for the future of the Helping Hands Network! I am working on expanding the platform to new communities and adding new features that will make it even easier for volunteers and organizers to connect, like in-built interviews, chat, and so on. I also have to take steps to protect user data and ensure that only legitimate events are posted.
