Inspiration
The inspiration for Helping Hands came from witnessing the struggles of semi-skilled workers like plumbers, electricians, and carpenters who find it difficult to secure consistent employment despite their expertise. We realized the need for a dedicated platform that connects these unsung heroes with job opportunities, helping them break free from the cycle of poverty and achieve financial stability. By addressing Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty) and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), we aim to make a meaningful impact on their lives and the broader community.
What it does
Helping Hands is a job portal specifically designed for semi-skilled workers. It allows them to create profiles, showcase their skills, and connect with potential employers who need their services. Employers can easily find and hire qualified workers through the platform, ensuring a seamless job matching process. The platform provides various features such as premium job listings, resume boosts, and training resources to enhance the job seekers' visibility and employability. Additionally, it fosters a sense of community by allowing users to share their experiences and support each other
How we built it
we built Helping Hands using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js) to ensure a robust and scalable solution. The development process involved several key steps:
Research and Planning: Conducted thorough research to understand the needs of semi-skilled workers and employers, and planned the platform's features accordingly. Design and Development: Created a user-friendly interface and developed the platform's backend to handle user data securely and efficiently.
Challenges we ran into
User Accessibility: Ensuring the platform is accessible to semi-skilled workers who may not be tech-savvy was a significant challenge. We focused on creating an intuitive and straightforward user interface. Data Security: Protecting user data was a top priority, and we had to implement robust security measures to prevent data breaches and ensure privacy.
What we learnt
User-Centric Design: Learned the value of incorporating user feedback into the design and development process to create a more effective and user-friendly platform.
What's next for Helping Hands
Feature Enhancements: Continuously improve the platform by adding new features such as advanced job matching algorithms, enhanced profiles, and training resources. Market Expansion: Expand the platform's reach to new regions and countries, focusing on areas with high unemployment rates among semi-skilled workers. Community Building: Foster a stronger sense of community among users by introducing forums, support groups, and mentorship programs. Partnerships: Establish partnerships with industry players, non-profits, and government agencies to enhance the platform's capabilities and support services.
