Inspiration
We were inspired to make this because there aren't a lot of dedicated sites where people are encouraged to lend a helping hand. This website is solely dedicated to people who are looking to better their community through food drives, charity events, and similar events they can attend.
What it does
Helping Hand pulls from the EventBrite API to fetch community related events and display them to the user. Users are allowed to log in, mark themselves as attending, and receive information related to the event they attended (Though some of this is not functional as of yet!)
How we built it
For the frontend, we built this with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React. For our backend, we used Node.js, Express.js, PostgreSQL, and we used data from EventBrite's API. We created the wireframe with Figma.
Challenges we ran into
EventBrite has some old API. Not all of the endpoints we needed were available to us, such as searching up events by category. We were able to find a way around that through the documentation citing other methods, and we pulled some basic events to show off on our front page.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is proud of simply being able to do this project in time! We all have a little bit of experience, but finishing what we did within the timeframe was a big challenge.
What we learned
Most of us learned a new framework or two - I know a few of us were new to React and APIs! We also learned how to use Git as a team together.
What's next for Helping Hand
We plan to implement functional logins, functional individual event pages, and the ability to mark events as attending as well as receive information about them via email.
