Inspiration
In the last few years, people we have known have passed from this deadly drug. Their intent was not to take this drug but a side effect of taking other recreational drugs laced with fentanyl. It is virtually impossible to know if a drug is laced with it as just 2mg of the drug is considered lethal (barely visible at a glance). It is impossible to stop everyone from taking recreational drugs but we can try our best to prevent the loss of life should we be in those circumstances.
What it does
Our app serves to provide resources on where to get Narcan (unbinds opioid receptors immediately stopping an overdose) as well as answers questions that a user may have related to overdoses and what the effects are. We also added an emergency call feature for panicked individuals in a high-stress situation such as bystanding in an overdose situation of someone.
How we built it
The app was built in SwiftUi, with the backend built in Python/Flask. We have a rest API that queries the OpenAI gpt3 api. We also integrated Okta Auth0 with Google login for abuse prevention on free Narcan kit requests and it also serves to provide a layer of authenticity.
Challenges we ran into
Locations of centers in California that provide Narcan as drug-related deaths are somewhat of a taboo topic in society and as such does not get the attention it needs to be stopped.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Implementation of GPT3 API and building a UI that we are extremely proud of and Auth0.
What we learned
We learned how to implement Auth0 and GPT3 API, Flask Servers, as well as SwiftUI.
What's next for Helping hand
Next steps for Helping Hand would be partnering with universities and applying for federal grants to try and make a dent in this massive epidemic. We also want to expand the project to android and creating a webpage for increased accessibility to resources.
