Inspiration
Moving to a new city can be tough. From simple tasks like setting up WiFi to finding trustworthy local support, people often feel lost. That gap inspired HelpHive — a platform where communities come together to support each other.
What it does
HelpHive builds a local helper network:
- People can post requests for everyday help.
- Verified local helpers (individuals, students, NGOs) can respond.
- Helpers can choose between volunteering or paid service.
- Acts as a part-time platform for students & community groups.
- Ratings & reviews build trust.
- Simple, safe, and community-driven.
How we built it
- Backend → Spring Boot REST APIs
- Database → MySQL
- Frontend → Angular (Web Application)
- Authentication → JWT tokens
- Deployment → Github
Code snippet idea:
@PostMapping("/request-help")
public ResponseEntity<String> createHelpRequest(@RequestBody HelpRequest request) {
helpService.save(request);
return ResponseEntity.ok("Help request created!");
}
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing trust vs. accessibility.
- Supporting both volunteer and paid options fairly.
- Real-time updates for requests & responses.
- Keeping the UI simple for low-tech users.
- Limited hackathon time for full feature rollout.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A working prototype of a community helper app in limited time.
- Clean, intuitive web-based UI.
- Secure login & verified helper model.
- A platform that can genuinely make life easier for newcomers while enabling helpers to earn or volunteer.
What we learned
- Aligning tech with social good is powerful.
- User experience is as important as functionality.
- Payment integration & volunteer options can coexist.
- Full-cycle dev (idea → build → deploy) in hackathon constraints.
What’s next for HelpHive
- Real-time chat & notifications.
- Local language support for inclusivity.
- Partnerships with NGOs & community centers.
- Hybrid volunteer + paid helper model at scale.
- Expanding HelpHive as a go-to web app for everyday community support.
