Help Me Understand

Inspiration

America is incredibly polarized right now. Change starts with a conversation.

What it does

Facilitates conversations between people with different political ideologies. Users self-identify their ideology, religion, age and gender (all fields except ideology are optional). Then they select the perspective they want to understand. eg. Female, age 18-24, Christian, Conservative. The app then matches people who want to understand each other. After the conversation, users rank how constructive the chat was. Users who are regularly part of constructive conversations are promoted.

How we built it

Entirely using Bolt and Expo Go.

Challenges we ran into

It was my first time making an app so honestly everything but bolt.new was a lifesaver. It makes app design accessible to people like me with limited coding background.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It works. For a really long time it didn't.

What we learned

I learnt how to design and build an app and the basics of TypeScript

What's next for Help Me Understand

I want to add a mapping function that helps people find others physically located near them. Conversations are so much better in person.
