Inspiration

We were really inspired by how communities banded together to support one another when the first Covid-19 lockdown occured over a year ago. While this trend, which was organised on decentralised networks such as whatsapp, has begun to decrease - we felt that a centralised web app that allows users to feel safe asking for and responding to help will reverse this and bring our communities closer.

What it does

A user is allowed to sign up and then post requests for help which volunteers may respond to. Alternatively, volunteers may advertise their time to allow people in need to contact them directly if they prefer.

How we built it

We built a backend SQLite database to store user data, along with a custom API (written in C#) to allow the frontend (built using W3 technologies and React.JS)

Challenges we ran into

Learning the different API requests (POST,GET,PATCH &c.) was challenging. Also learning React.JS for the first time along with figuring out how much we would like to use it was also difficult.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We a proud of making a functioning web 2.0 website with a front end and back end along with the custom API. We find that being able to build a better teamwork and sense of comeraderie is a laudable achievement in the current pandemic climate.

What we learned

We learned React.JS along with how to make a custom API. Some members also improved their knowledge of javascript

What's next for Help Hub

"Help Hub Live" to allow members to privately communicate with each other via our platform in real time as many members may not feel comfortable posting their contact details on the internet. "Help Hub Premium" to allow commercial / charitable organisations to directly contact volunteers or to organise events that bring the local communities together.
