*🧠 Inspiration * Every year, workplace accidents cost thousands of lives. According to global safety reports referenced by the International Labour Organization, millions of workers suffer occupational injuries annually, and thousands lose their lives due to preventable workplace hazards. In high-risk industries like construction, mining, and manufacturing, head injuries, toxic gas exposure, heat stress, and delayed emergency response remain major causes of fatalities. Most safety helmets today are passive — they only protect after an accident happens. They don’t monitor health, detect danger, or send alerts in real time. We were inspired by one simple thought: If technology can make cars smart and homes smart, why are worker safety helmets still not smart? HelmetX was born from the belief that even one preventable death is too many. We wanted to build something that doesn’t just protect workers — but actively watches over them.

** 🦺 What it does ** HelmetX is an AI-powered smart safety helmet that: Monitors heart rate and body temperature Detects toxic gases in the environment Identifies sudden falls or heavy impacts Detects if the helmet is removed during work hours Sends instant alerts to supervisors Logs incidents on a real-time dashboard It creates a connected safety ecosystem between workers and supervisors.

*⚙️ How we built it * Hardware: ESP32 microcontroller Heart rate sensor Temperature sensor Gas sensor (CO / hazardous gases) Accelerometer & gyroscope for fall detection Software: React-based dashboard for live monitoring Backend API for data processing Real-time communication via WebSockets Database for storing worker safety logs We integrated IoT + AI concepts to build a working prototype during the hackathon.

** 🚧 Challenges we ran into ** Sensor calibration for accurate gas detection Reducing false positives in fall detection Managing real-time data transmission stability Balancing hardware weight and comfort Integrating multiple sensors efficiently Each challenge pushed us to iterate quickly and optimize both hardware and software.

** 🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of ** Built a functional prototype within the hackathon timeline Achieved real-time health and hazard monitoring Successfully triggered automated emergency alerts Created a supervisor dashboard with live worker status Designed a scalable system architecture We transformed a regular helmet into an intelligent safety system.

** 📚 What we learned ** IoT systems require careful calibration and real-world testing Real-time systems demand efficient data handling User experience matters even in industrial tech Safety tech must prioritize reliability over complexity Execution speed is critical in hackathons Most importantly, we learned that innovation is not about adding features — it's about solving real problems effectively.

** 🚀 What's next for HelmetX – AI-Powered Smart Safety Helmet for Industrial Worker ** AI-based fatigue prediction GPS-based location tracking Cloud-based fleet safety analytics Integration with industrial compliance systems Lightweight industrial-grade manufacturing Pilot testing with construction companies Our vision is to turn HelmetX into a scalable safety startup that protects workers across industries.
