Inspiration:
Buddy was inspired by the urgent need for accessible mental health support. In a world where therapy can be expensive and therapists are not always available, we saw an opportunity to harness the power of AI to provide empathetic, immediate support for people with mental health disabilities or those seeking therapeutic guidance. Our goal was to create a stigma-free, accessible tool that anyone could turn to at any time for mental support.
What it does:
Buddy is a user-friendly app that begins with a simple yet powerful question: "How are you feeling?" Users input their emotional state using a slider, and a GPT-4 powered chatbot tailors its responses accordingly, offering conversation, support, and guidance. Whether it's offering coping strategies, lending a virtual ear for venting, or providing motivational support, Buddy is designed to be a compassionate companion in the user's mental health journey.
How we built it:
Buddy was built using advanced GPT technology integrated into a android mobile app platform. We used Android Studio for the IDE.
Challenges we ran into:
Creating a Java App for the first time wasn't easy, and learning how to use the Android Studio IDE and working with the UI was a bit of a learning curve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We are proud of developing an app that breaks down barriers to mental health support. Creating an AI that can genuinely provide comfort and assistance to those in distress is a significant accomplishment.
What we learned:
We learned a great deal about natural language processing, emotional intelligence in AI, and the intricacies of mental health support. The importance of user-centered design in creating health-related apps became profoundly clear to us.
What's next for Buddy:
The future for Buddy includes continuous improvements in AI conversation abilities, and future sections and features in the app.
