Inspiration
Building apps for Jira and Confluence traditionally required setting up infrastructure, managing auth flows, and handling security concerns—all of which created friction for first-time developers. Atlassian Forge eliminates those barriers. We wanted to test how easily a complete beginner could build a real, working app using Forge. Thus, Hello Forge was born—a minimal, functional Jira app designed to say “Hello” in the simplest yet most impactful way: by interacting directly within the Atlassian ecosystem.
How we built it
We built Hello Forge using:
Atlassian Forge Framework (no servers or external DBs)
Custom UI with React for the frontend
Forge APIs to access context like issue, project, and user
Forge Tunnel and forge deploy to iterate quickly
Used manifest.yml to define app modules and permissions
Challenges we ran into
Understanding Forge’s permission model initially took time
Learning the exact structure of context data required trial and error
Custom UI deployment can sometimes be slow or require refreshes
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully deployed our first Forge app
