I handed out a few business cards at an event recently and a couple of days after I was still waiting for responses, which got me thinking that perhaps the cards had gotten lost in the bags/purses/wallets of those I met. Turns out I was just being impatient! However I started thinking about improving the interaction and creating a way of reminding new contacts of meeting you.

What it does

After entering the new contact's address and then your own the app will email you both, starting the conversation! When you get home it acts as a reminder and initiates the conversation.

How I built it

I built the front-end using plain Javascript, using Gulp do process my SASS into CSS. I used Serverless (hooked up to AWS Lambda and API Gateway) to run a small Node.JS function to send the emails.

Challenges I ran into

I found it quite hard to get the backend function operating properly. I was getting Fetch errors for a long while, because it wasn't returning a Access-Control-Allow-Origin header. I had presumed that API Gateway would be adding this but it turned out I had to specify it in the Serverless callback.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud that I was able to create the whole app in a week and for free. Well mostly! The domain was the only cost. Also this was the first time I used Service Worker to make this a progressive web app.

What I learned

I learned how to create a progressive web app!

What's next for Hello

I'd like to get it used by people and start getting feedback. I think it'd be handy to develop a sort of address book and improve the email sent out. We'll have to see!
