Inspirations
Our artistic inspirations on Hellfire Hair were definitely a mix of mostly Bayonetta, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and a little bit of the Persona series. There were plenty of other minor things here and there, but its these three that I'd say shine through the most.
Bayonetta was a huge point of inspiration here, as we sought out to create a game that had a similarly fabulous, yet campy flair to it. It's not meant to be taken too seriously, but at its core there is a subtle narrative of self-acceptance and one's appearance being a reflection of their identity.
Challenges
We knew we wanted the character "animations," to be done with snap poses, of which were done by our Lead Artist, Athena Chang. But we also knew that'd elicit a sense of stagnation to the visuals even if the game is relatively fast-paced and packed with neat visual effects. Eventually, we deduced that having the monster hair animated in a unique style, through tweening, would be both efficient and also stylistically cohesive, while also effectively keeping the game alive and moving.
