Inspiration

Remember the time you bought your first cryptocurrency?

You register for Coinbase or Binance using your passport, which of course you couldn’t find. You jump through so many hoops, you fill out all the forms, find all your id, maybe even have to make a video call with someone to verify you’re really… you.

Then you have to set up a Metamask account with your 24 word pass phrase, “spaceship”, “monkey”, “dishwasher”, which you can’t lose and you have to keep super safe and super secure.

And then, to keep it reeeally secure, you need some fancy USB stick that you have to order online, and plug into your computer every time you want to make a transfer? Let’s face it. The User Experience of Crypto is broken. But we can fix it.

What it does

Here at Proton Labs, we want to bring the mainnet to the mainstream, starting with Hedera Hashgraph. Our flagship product is HELIX: a Hedera-native, non-custodial wallet, that brings the simplicity of Web 2 to the world of Web 3.

Every Web 3 obstacle in the user experience has been eliminated, to produce the most seamless, familiar and intuitive flow possible. We will make crypto the way it was meant to be: by the people, for the people. And we’re doing it here first, on Hedera Hashgraph.

How we built it

We have built HELIX using a modern technology stack, including React and Node.js, written in Typescript, hosted on Firebase.

Challenges

Working with the various SDKs (Hashgraph, CoinGecko, Web3Auth) required a lot of upfront research and understanding. Some of the blockchain-specific aspects of the project (e.g. signing transactions, connecting DAPPs, authentication via private keys) were also particularly tricky new flows for our team. Fortunately, we started researching solutions very early on when the hackathon was announced, so we were able to give ourselves ample time to learn all these new technologies and overcome the hurdles.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really happy with our seamless user experience and wallet/DAPP integration layer that we have built, without the need for a browser extension. We really see this being able to drive adoption of Hedera and open the doors to DAPP developers with our easy-to-use library for wallet to DAPP connection.
