Inspiration
As freshmen in high school, we were constantly having to deal with conflicts regarding our newly found freedoms. Every time we were out without our parents, there was the ever-present inconvenience of communicating with our parents every hour so they would know that we were okay. Thus, Helicopter was born, a fast, hassle-free way to grant our parents peace of mind.
What it does
Helicopter allows for kids to quickly update their parents and let them know they are okay with quite literally a touch of the button.
How we built it
We built Helicopter using android studio and Xcode in order to explore different interfaces and make it available to a wider range of people.
Challenges we ran into
The majority of our team hadn't coded outside of eclipse and java, so moving outside of that to creating an actual app in Xcode and android studio was extremely difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of learning as we progressed, and eventually putting out a product.
What we learned
We learned that coding is very multi-faceted, so just having fluency in one language doesn't necessarily mean you can apply it in many concepts. Therefore, we quickly realized its important to be open-minded and ready to learn.
What's next for Helicopter
Helicopter is only going to expand from here. Next, we are planning on integrating a Google Maps API in order to add location services. Additionally, we would have liked to have actually program the app to push the notifications, however we lacked the knowledge necessary to do so.
