Inspiration

I decided to make a simple game, since I was planning on attending my first hackathon solo. But . . . I get a little overambitious with the things I get excited about. I thought about what gives a heist cool and fun - its tensity between crew members and the challenges they face for the prized jewels. That immediately made me want to remix a couple of high-energy inducing games such as "Dumb Ways to Die", "Wario: Get it together", "Kahoot", and "Jackbox party" and turn them into a heist-themed mad-dash party game!

What it does

Users can decide the device that is host, and then players can join its lobbies and can compete with bots too. The core mechanic is as such:

  • The central bank has a limited amount of capital that is disbursed to players as they complete minigames.
  • Rounds are timed and have alternating themes "Cyber/Classic" that affect how the UI is stylized. Between rounds, players can choose to sabotage others in order to get ahead
  • Minigames test reflex, memory and more - the further in the round, the faster the games become. The bank regains any currency lost by players failing a game.
  • ElevenLabs AI voice reads a transcript that narrates each heist.

How we built it

The original idea was mine alone - minus other video game influences. OpenAI was used to refined constraints and help make minigame ideas. Claude then refined these ideas, and worked through Linker to itemize, prioritize, and publish completed tasks.

Challenges we ran into

My first inspiration was initially "spoons" and "hungry hippos", but I couldn't figure out how to validate human interactions (Drawing a card, completing a physical challenge), so eventually I decided to go migrate everything to online only. Debugging the code to display exactly what I want.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Linking agents and other tools together to handle more complex tasks, turning in a deliverable as a solo participant.

What we learned

Prompting can be just as challenging as programming. The bulk of my time during RowdyHacksXII went toward debugging and building the files. Also: log EVERYTHING!

What's next for HEIST HAVOC!

More playtesting, more minigames, and more content to come!
