Inspiration
HEIC Digital was born from a common problem: the inability to open photos with the HEIC extension. In mid-2023, while working on a web project at Space Bits that automated the processing of photos uploaded by users at an event, we noticed that some images wouldn’t display correctly. Users with iPhones had uploaded photos in the HEIC format, which our website couldn’t process. This issue sparked the idea for HEIC Digital.
What it does
HEIC Digital allows anyone to open, view, and convert HEIC files online without installing software. Users can view photos and explore all associated metadata—like date, device, geolocation, exposure settings, color profile, and copyright information. It also provides a batch converter from HEIC to JPG, making it easier to manage and share images while preserving their metadata.
How I built it
We initially developed a system to transform HEIC files to JPG for internal use, ensuring the original metadata remained intact. After seeing its usefulness, we created a simple website for friends, collaborators, and later the general public. Since its launch in October 2023, HEIC Digital has grown to include multiple languages, enhanced batch conversion, and a more user-friendly interface.
Challenges I ran into
One of the main challenges was handling the HEIC format reliably across different devices and ensuring metadata was preserved during conversion. Additionally, building a batch conversion system that could handle multiple large files efficiently required careful optimization.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I’m proud that HEIC Digital evolved from an internal tool into a public web service used worldwide. The converter now works smoothly on Apple, Windows, and Android devices, and users can not only convert files but also explore detailed metadata, making it a versatile and informative tool.
What I learned
I learned a lot about image formats, metadata standards (EXIF), cross-platform compatibility, and web-based file processing. I also gained experience in building tools that are simple to use yet powerful enough for professional needs.
What's next for HEIC Digital
We plan to continue improving the website by adding more functionality, supporting additional file formats, enhancing metadata visualization, and expanding language support. The goal is to make HEIC Digital the go-to online tool for anyone working with HEIC images.
