Inspiration
Extreme heat continues to become an increasing problem within my community, with it often occurring in emergency room visits, and even death. These events had inspired me into creating HeatShield AI, a platform that's design to inform and prepare people for any dangerous heat conditions.
What it does
HeatShield AI is an AI powered platform that helps to predict and inform the user about any dangerous heat conditions that are going to occur. Through entering their location, HeatShield AI is able to accurately acquire the environmental data of the air, and use that to help predict whether or not there is extreme heat to be expected.
How we built it
We first researched how much impact that extreme heat has over public health and the population, with conditions like heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat stroke, and how extreme heat can cause death. With this research, we designed HeatShield AI as a platform that includes environmental data such as AQI, temperature, humidity, UV index, and weather trends that combine to generate health-risk information the user will find meaningful. We had then created both a business and development plan for the platform through identifying our key users groups such as parents, outdoor workers, athletes, schools, and local communities. By having our main focus towards public safety, prevention, and preparedness, we set the ground for HeatShield AI to become a solution that can be realistically developed and scaled in the future.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was how we would separate HeatShield AI from traditional weather apps. Since weather apps already provided information like temperature and humidity, it was hard to say that our app wasn't just another simple weather app. But compared to those weather apps, we include that information along with translating it into actual health risk information that better informs and prepares the user for that dangerous environment.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
The accomplishments we are the most proud of include the creation of the heat risk score system, having us go beyond the idea of the platform just being a weather app, and developing a realistic plan for our start up. The creation of the heat risk score system involved combining all the environmental data of the surrounding area, into a simple and understandable scoring chart that effectively shows how dangerous the current environment is, and how you can protect yourself against it. We had managed to overcome the separation of HeatShield AI being a weather forecasting app through having it use that environmental data to display actual health-risk information, along with providing option for preventing those health risks. And finally, we are very proud of our startup plan, which provides a realistic overview about our target users, business model, development plan, and the future plan of the platform.
What We Learned
Throughout the development of HeatShield AI, we've learned that extreme heat is more complex than temperature, with conditions like humidity and air quality involved in those conditions. We've as well learned how much of an impact that public safety technology has over the population, helping people to understand and prepare for any dangerous environmental conditions. And to end it off, we learned that creating a successful startup takes more than just a good idea. It takes careful planning, understanding your users, knowing the scalability, and overall the long-term impact of your startup.
What's next for HeatShield AI
Our next step for HeatShield AI is to continue developing the platform, transforming it into tool that can be used by individuals, communities, schools, and cities as well. We also hope to improve the accuracy of the heat risk score system, introduce more personalized health recommendations, and add more features such as school safety integrations. Along with that, we would plan partnerships with organizations like schools and local governments that will benefit from heat-risk information and safety planning. Extreme heat will continue to become a rising problem, but our goal for HeatShield AI is to help communities be more informed, prepared, and resilient against those harsher environments.
