Inspiration

Living in Texas means dealing with extremely hot weather, especially during the summer. We wanted to create a website that helps people understand how dangerous the heat can be and how to stay safe. My goal was to make heat safety information easy to understand and accessible to everyone.

What it does

HeatSafeTX is an interactive heat safety website designed to help people prepare for hot weather. It includes a Heat Index Calculator where users can adjust the temperature and humidity to see how hot it actually feels. The website also displays different heat risk levels and provides safety recommendations. In addition, it offers heat safety tips, emergency information, and cooling resources.

How we built it

We built HeatSafeTX using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. HTML was used to organize the website's content, CSS was used to create the design and responsive layout, and JavaScript was used to make the Heat Index Calculator interactive. We used CodeHS to work on our code and GitHub to store and share our project page.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was writing JavaScript for the Heat Index Calculator. We had to make sure the temperature and humidity sliders worked correctly and the calculator displayed accurate results and risk levels. Another challenge was using CSS to create a responsible layout that looked good on different screen sizes. We also had to debug our code and make sure HTML, CSS, and JavaScript worked together. These challenges helped improve our coding and problem-solving skill.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of creating a website that addresses a real-world problem. Through HeatSafeTX, we wanted to raise awareness about heat-related illnesses and help people make safer decisions during hot weather. We are especially proud of developing an interactive Heat Index Calculator that helps users understand how temperature and humidity affect their risk. By combining technology, education, and teamwork, we created a project that has the potential to make a positive impact on our community. Our greatest accomplishment is not just building a functional website, but using our coding skills to help protect others.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned more about HTML, CSS, JavaScript and website development. More importantly, I learned how valuable teamwork and communication are when working on a coding project. Collaborating with teammates helped us share ideas, solve coding problems, and improve our website. We learned how to listen to different opinions, divide responsibilities, and support each other when facing challenges.

What's next for HeatSafeTX

In the future, we would like to add real-time weather data, location-based heat alerts, and an interactive map showing nearby cooling centers. These features could make HeatSafeTX even more useful for people living in Texas.
