Inspiration

Extreme heat is a life-safety problem, but relief infrastructure is often measured as a directory entry rather than a service that was actually available during a hazardous window. A cooling center can be listed yet locked; a drinking-water point can be mapped yet dry. HeatProof closes that verification gap for residents, field teams, municipalities, and climate-finance reviewers.

What it does

HeatProof is a verifiable proof-of-adaptation network for extreme-heat relief infrastructure. It combines:

  • Live hazard context: Open-Meteo weather telemetry with a transparent NOAA heat-index calculation across five hazard bands.
  • Accessible civic wayfinding: a multilingual EN/HI/MR resource map and directory designed for phones, low-connectivity conditions, keyboard use, and high-contrast viewing.
  • Privacy-minimized evidence: browser-side EXIF removal, coordinate coarsening to roughly 1.1 km, and Aadhaar/phone/email redaction before any SHA-256 digest is created.
  • Deterministic decision support: an explainable rules assistant that classifies evidence, resists prompt-injection strings, and abstains when evidence is insufficient. It is not presented as neural vision.
  • Independent witness quorum: a nine-state invariant-driven workflow requires at least two independent witnesses and escalates review during severe heat conditions.
  • Tamper-evident receipts: canonical records are aggregated with Merkle proofs and sealed into auditable service receipts.
  • Truthful dual-mode ledger: the working demo uses a local SHA-256 chain labelled LOCAL_DEMO. A viem adapter for Arbitrum Sepolia is implemented, but we do not claim a confirmed testnet transaction.
  • Operations intelligence: coverage, outage queues, evidence states, and portable JSON audit exports help decision-makers identify where promised relief is failing.

How we built it

The interface uses React 18, strict TypeScript, Vite, semantic HTML, custom CSS tokens, and Lucide icons. Weather observations come from Open-Meteo; heat risk is computed with the NOAA heat-index formula. Web Crypto provides SHA-256 digests over canonical JSON. Client-side sanitizers remove common PII patterns and image metadata before evidence is transformed.

The decision layer is deliberately deterministic and human-in-the-loop: every outcome exposes its rule path and may abstain rather than fabricate certainty. The proof layer maintains a local append-only hash chain and Merkle aggregation while the viem-based Arbitrum Sepolia adapter defines the production anchoring boundary.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest work was not adding more features; it was preserving trust boundaries. We had to align visible labels with ARIA names, remove nested interactive SVG behavior, harden text normalization against adversarial input, make modals usable on 320 px screens, and keep every blockchain and AI claim bounded by evidence.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • 121/121 unit and integration tests pass across 13 files.
  • 87.4% statement/line, 81.69% branch, and 98.61% function coverage.
  • 56/56 Playwright executions pass across seven viewports from 320 px to 1920 px.
  • Automated Axe scans found zero violations in the tested states.
  • The deterministic evidence benchmark reached 100% accuracy and 1.0 macro F1 on its declared 12-case golden set, with a 41.7% abstention rate.
  • Full-history secret scanning found no exposed keys or unhashed PII, and the production dependency audit reports zero vulnerabilities.
  • The live prototype and public repository are reproducible from a clean checkout.

What we learned

Verifiable adaptation requires more than blockchain anchoring. The strongest system begins with careful provenance, minimizes sensitive data before hashing, makes uncertainty visible, and lets independent observers challenge a claim. A cryptographic receipt is useful only when the evidence and decision path it binds are understandable.

What's next for HeatProof

Next we would connect low-cost water-flow and door-state sensors, add C2PA-compatible capture provenance, conduct field pilots with civic partners, and anchor verified batches on Arbitrum Sepolia. Longer term, these receipts could support maintenance SLAs and parametric climate-resilience finance without exposing vulnerable residents.

Track alignment

Climate Data & Environmental Monitoring. HeatProof turns fragmented weather, infrastructure, and field observations into a privacy-minimized, auditable dataset that communities and institutions can use to verify whether heat-adaptation services were available when needed.
