Inspiration

As Virginia Tech freshman, our team has had first-hand experience with adapting to college life. Students are allowed to choose what to eat for every meal, but we quickly found out that making smart food decisions can be challenging. Although Virginia Tech has top-rated dining, sometimes it's more convenient to cook at our homes, or the dorms as we now know it. Inspired by our frequent dilemma, our team created a website to help guide others towards producing easy, dorm-friendly meals with nutrition resources along the way to help.

What Does It Do?

  • Holds a collection of recipes and meal ideas selected by our team
  • Provides access to nutrition resources available to Virginia Tech students
  • Uses a form connected to Google Search to find nutrition facts for VT Dining food items

How We Built It

We built our desktop website using the collaborative browser Replit and coding with HTML, CSS, and JS from scratch.

Challenges We Ran Into

Our first main challenge was brainstorming an idea which we could execute. We questioned what features we could realistically put on a website and there were many proposals early on. Later after deciding on our hack, our team was faced with the challenge of learning new coding languages in a limited time frame, but we eventually overcame these obstacles and was able to produce a finished product.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

Our team is proud of how we learned new coding languages so quickly and most importantly, proud of our finished project as first-time hackers with limited experience. Other accomplishments include:

  • Learning how to code tabs and pages for a website
  • Learning how CSS grids function
  • Customizing our website to meet our visual standards
  • Creating a project that we as students would use

What We Learned

Our team gained a lot during this hackathon, such as:

  • Experience with a collaborative coding browser
  • Teamwork and project-planning skills
  • Basics of HTML, CSS, and JS

What's Next for Hearty Hokies

We hope to continue improving to our website, with additions and features such as:

  • Upgrading the website to be mobile-friendly
  • Adding a blog feature for students to post their own recipes
  • New original recipes and updated tips
