Inspiration

As the pandemic continues to change our everyday lives, it may be affecting individuals' access to care. Heart attacks have always been a hot topic in the world of medicine because of its fatal consequences and seemingly gradual takeover. It's always been difficult for everyday people to identify whether or not they are having a heart attack, but with the presence of the pandemic, there will undoubtedly be an increase the numbers of people who are facing heart attacks and not seeking care. Whether it be because they don't know the symptoms or because they don't want to go to a healthcare facility due to the pandemic, people are going to be suffering from heart attacks in silence. That is why I wanted to put a spotlight on the health issue of heart attacks with my project, HeartStrong.

What it does

HeartStrong is an all-in-one resource for all things related to heart attacks. There is a risk analysis quiz, which is the first thing that users see to promote completion of the quiz. Furthermore, there is general information from Mayo Clinic available on the site in an easy-to-read format, a cardiology services locator, and a chat room that connects users to healthcare workers.

How I built it

I used HTML/CSS/JS to build the site, Qualtrics for the quiz, and Google Maps API for the cardiology services locator.

Challenges I ran into

This was my first time experimenting with an API, which was a fun learning experience. I wasn't familiar with how they worked so I spent quite some time learning about it. It also took me quite some time to draw out the flow of the quiz to determine risk. I had to fix a lot of display logic errors to ensure that the right questions were being asked depending on the users' previous answers.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud that my site works and that I created something meaningful! APIs have always seem daunting to me so I'm glad I was able to implement one on my own for the first time. I'm also proud of the general layout of the site.

What I learned

I learned about working with APIs.

What's next for HeartStrong

In the future, I hope to add more features to the chatroom. I think it'd be nice to have video chat so that communication is better. Additionally, I'd like to add more information about heart attacks to the information section.
