🕯️ Hearthmind: A Safe Haven for the Neurodivergent & Healing
🌱 What Inspired Us
Hearthmind was born out of necessity.
So many online spaces claim to be inclusive — but they’re loud, over-stimulating, competitive, or riddled with tracking and surveillance capitalism. For those of us living with PTSD, autism, anxiety, TBI, or just a deeply different way of processing the world, these environments aren’t just unwelcoming — they’re harmful.
We wanted to build a quiet rebellion: A digital hearth for the neurodivergent and healing. No judgment. No gamification. No ads. Just presence, peace, and people who get it.
🛠️ How We Built It
Hearthmind was designed from the ground up with accessibility, privacy, and trauma-informed design as first-class citizens.
Stack:
• Next.js + Tailwind CSS for fast, responsive UI
• Supabase for auth and database
• Open source by default under CC0
• WCAG-compliant
• No analytics. No tracking.
We consulted neurodivergent users at every step — from UX sketches to UI tones to crisis resource integrations.
🧠 What We Learned
-> Emotional UX is everything. Tone, microcopy, and even button shapes influence perceived safety. -> “Default safe” > “opt-out of unsafe.” Many users can’t afford to dig through settings to feel okay. -> Consent must be granular. Analytics? Even if ethical, still need explicit informed consent. -> Games can heal — if they’re not games. No leaderboards. No failure states. Just calm.
⚠️ Challenges We Faced
- Balancing visibility and safety. How do you grow a community without opening the door to trolls and trauma triggers?
- Avoiding scope creep. We wanted to add everything — but focused on doing a few things with care.
- Platform accessibility. Many modern tools aren’t built with neurodivergence in mind. We had to override defaults, disable animations, and rebuild components to ensure consistency.
- Funding. Building ad-free, surveillance-free tech isn’t profitable — but it’s necessary.
✨ Final Thoughts
Hearthmind isn’t just an app. It’s a living invitation:
You are not broken. You are becoming.
If even one person finds peace here, it was worth every line of code.
