An echo of you — across time, space, and soul

📌 Inspiration

In a world where algorithms recommend content based on consumption, I wanted to go deeper — to build a meaningful, emotional mirror that reflects not just what you like, but who you are. The idea came from imagining what it would be like to meet versions of yourself in the past, present, and future — shaped by taste, emotion, and imagination. What if your love for soulful jazz or cyberpunk novels could create a character from another time — someone who feels like you, but lived in a different reality?

That’s how HeartEcho was born: a fusion of LLM creativity, cultural intelligence, and emotional storytelling.

💡 What it does

HeartEcho is an AI-powered interactive experience that:

  • Gathers user personality through curated, emotionally intelligent questions.
  • Extracts core tastes in film, music, books, food, and emotion.

  • Generates three fictional Echo Mates:

    • 🕰️ Past Echo — a persona shaped by your tastes, imagined in a different historical era.
    • 🌐 Present Echo — a real person from the present with similar taste, identified using Qloo's cultural intelligence API.
    • 🚀 Future Echo — a futuristic version of a personality like yours, speaking in speculative, visionary tone.

Each of these characters engages with the user in a unique way, creating an immersive, poetic, and emotionally resonant dialogue across time.

🛠️ How I built it

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, Flask templates
  • Backend: Python (Flask), OpenAI GPT-4o API for LLM generation and narrative crafting
  • Cultural Intelligence: Qloo Taste API (Advanced Entity Search and Enrichment)
  • Image Generation: OpenAI DALL·E API for generating Echo visuals
  • Environment: python-dotenv for API security, hosted locally

I built a form-driven interactive app that first captures the user’s inner preferences and emotional cues. These are passed to the backend, where:

  1. OpenAI GPT-4o processes the personality and crafts Echo stories.
  2. Qloo API extracts cultural entities and matches taste clusters.
  3. Each Echo is uniquely styled — from ancient poets to cybernetic beings.
  4. Visual portraits are generated using DALL·E to enhance immersion.

⚠️ Challenges

  • Designing emotionally intuitive questions that feel both deep and lightweight
  • Extracting clean and relevant keywords from open-ended user inputs for Qloo API
  • Limiting API costs while ensuring expressive, high-quality Echo outputs
  • Aligning three narrative styles (past, present, future) while keeping the user emotionally connected
  • Handling asynchronous generation of multiple Echo responses and managing response delays
  • Balancing fictional flair with psychological resonance in character crafting

🚀 What's next for HeartEcho

In future enhancements, I envision turning each Echo into an interactive chatbot:

  • 🕯️ The Past Echo will speak and behave like someone from a chosen historical era (e.g., a 16th-century poet or WWII thinker).
  • 🤖 The Future Echo will be an AI companion inspired by speculative philosophies, speaking in imaginative futuristic language.
  • 🌍 The Present Echo will be a real person, matched live based on Qloo’s taste-matching intelligence (and possibly social data) — like discovering your soul twin across the world.

This could unlock emotionally aligned matchmaking, friendship-building, and even creative collaborations based on personality, not just profile pics.

Don’t call it dating — call it "Taste-based Echo alignment".
