We were interested in animations that could be created using dot matrix displays. As a result we took mundane tasks like checking your heart rate on a Fitbit with the goal of adding a visually appealing twist.

Our project represents the user's pulse on a dot matrix display with an animated heart. As your heart rate goes dup, the size of the matrix heart increases and it beats faster.

We used a pulse scanner, Arduino, and the dot matrix display. We coded the Arduino to take input from the pulse scanner and output the result onto the dot matrix display.

It was difficult to test for accuracy in our scanner readings. Additionally animating the the dot matrix display to look aesthetic was a challenge because it is was small and had even dimensions which made it hard to create an even-looking display.

We are proud that we were able to use the limited hardware around us to create something visually pleasing.

We learned how to solder. We also learned about using pulse sensors.

We would like to turn this display into a small badge that people can wear on their sleeves.
