Inspiration
With inspiration drawn from UNESCO's commitment to "Ensuring that all children have access to basic education of good quality." Inclusive classrooms, not only help disabled students socialize and access more resources but also enhance non-disabled students' communication skills through peer tutoring. We believed that by creating an inclusive learning environment, we could open doors to opportunities for every individual.
What it does
Hear-Able is an online platform designed for creating inclusive classrooms and fostering connections among teachers, disabled students, and non-disabled students. The platform facilitates communication through features such as speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities.
Key Features:
- Speech-to-Text: Transforming the instructor's spoken words into written text.
- Text-to-Speech: Allowing users to have the app read aloud typed text.
This dual functionality enhances accessibility, making educational interactions more seamless and accommodating for all students.
How we built it
Utilizing a diverse range of technologies, our development team employed:
- Next.js for the frontend,
- JavaScript as the primary programming language,
- Tailwind CSS with CSS Modules for a sleek and responsive design.
We use MongoDB as our data storage solution, ensuring scalability and flexibility in data management. Additionally, the integration of Azure AI Services played a pivotal role in enhancing the core functionalities of our platform.
Challenges we ran into
With a time constraint, integrating Azure AI services with our platform posed a challenge. However, our development team navigated through it by relying on learning resources. Optimizing API calls also presented a challenge to ensure the efficient processing of substantial text data stored in our database.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successful Application Implementation: We seamlessly developed and implemented the application within a short timeframe. Our focus was not only on functionality but also on a user-friendly interface, making the platform accessible to a diverse audience.
Effective Team Collaboration: We successfully collaborated despite differing schedules. The team actively engaged with the resources provided by Azure to enhance our skills, ensuring that the project stands out among others.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned to work collaboratively under time constraints and from diverse perspectives. Our experience with Azure AI revealed the potential to empower and revolutionize various aspects of the world, extending beyond education. This learning journey strengthened our teamwork and opened our eyes to cutting-edge technologies like Azure AI.
What's next for Hear-Able
1. Real-time Language Translation which allows users to receive instant translations from teachers. This feature enhances inclusivity by facilitating communication between international students and teachers. Additionally, it provides more opportunities to learn and engage in the class in multiple languages.
2. AI Tutor which enables students to study independently and identify areas for improvement with their personalized AI tutor.
3. Teaching Plan for Teachers which empowers teachers to modify their plans within the platform, aided by AI. Our platform can gather feedback from the AI tutor and customize teachers' plans to be more effective.
