Inspiration
The idea for HeaMix came from a road trip to Valparai. While driving through the hills, we lost network connectivity and couldn't rely on music streaming services.
Although we already had plenty of songs downloaded on our phones, choosing the right song for the moment became surprisingly difficult.
The misty hills, sudden rain, cold weather, and changing atmosphere made us realize that the music should match the environment. Instead of manually searching through playlists, we wanted the app to understand the moment and suggest something suitable.
That experience inspired HeaMix — a music player that uses the weather around you to help decide what to play.
What it does
HeaMix is an AI-powered offline music player that organizes your local music and creates playlists based on the current weather.
The app can recognize different weather conditions such as:
- Clear and sunny
- Cloudy
- Rain
- Drizzle
- Mist and fog
- Snow
- Thunderstorms
Key Features
- AI-powered song classification
- Weather-based playlists
- Offline music playback
- Shuffle between weather playlists
- Local music library management
- Lyrics support
- Clean and minimal music-player interface
- Ad-free listening experience
The goal is simple: open the app and start listening without spending time deciding what to play.
How we built it
HeaMix was built as a native Android application using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
The application uses Android's media playback capabilities for reliable local music playback and background audio.
The local music library is scanned and analyzed so that songs can be organized without depending entirely on online music metadata.
AI is used to classify songs based on their names and themes and associate them with different moods and weather contexts.
The weather information is then combined with the locally classified music to generate relevant playlists dynamically.
The interface was designed with a focus on simplicity, keeping important controls accessible while avoiding unnecessary screens and clutter.
Challenges We Ran Into
Building HeaMix involved several technical and design challenges.
One of the biggest challenges was creating an AI-based classification system that could understand songs using limited information such as their names and existing metadata.
We also wanted the experience to work reliably offline, since one of the main ideas behind HeaMix is that users should be able to listen to their downloaded music without depending on streaming services.
Other challenges included:
- Managing large local music libraries
- Keeping background playback reliable
- Handling different weather conditions and classifications
- Creating useful AI-based song categories
- Avoiding repetitive recommendations
- Managing playlists and playback queues
- Building a responsive Jetpack Compose UI
- Supporting lyrics and music metadata
- Handling different audio output devices
- Maintaining a smooth experience across Android devices
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We're proud that HeaMix grew from a simple idea into a complete offline music experience.
Instead of building another traditional local music player, we focused on reducing the effort involved in deciding what to listen to.
The combination of AI-based music classification, real-time weather context, offline playback, and a clean interface allows HeaMix to create a more contextual listening experience from music that users already have on their devices.
We're also proud of building and testing the core functionality ourselves and continuously improving the application based on real-world usage.
What We Learned
Building HeaMix taught us that creating a good music application is not just about playing audio.
We learned about:
- Android audio and media playback
- Jetpack Compose and modern Android UI development
- AI-based classification and recommendation systems
- Local media and metadata processing
- Weather API integration
- Background playback
- Playlist and queue management
- Audio-device handling
- Performance optimization
- Designing interfaces that reduce user effort
Most importantly, we learned that good design can remove decisions instead of adding more features.
HeaMix is built around that idea: the user should spend less time searching and more time listening.
What's Next for HeaMix: AI Music Player
HeaMix is still evolving.
Our next goal is to make the music experience even more personalized and intelligent.
Future improvements may include:
- More advanced AI music recommendations
- Improved mood and activity-based playlists
- Smarter weather-aware recommendations
- Natural-language music search
- Better lyrics and metadata support
- Improved audio-device switching
- More personalized home-screen experiences
- Optional synchronization across devices
- More adaptive and contextual music experiences
The long-term vision for HeaMix is to create a music player that understands your music, your environment, and the moment you're in — while keeping the experience simple, private, and focused on listening.
