Inspiration
When we sat down to brainstorm about how we could create an impact in individuals' lives. We realized that nutrition is a very important subject that always tends to be disregarded and just simply forgotten about. So we decided to come up with sets of software that not only allow users to have a healthier diet but to also save food that would otherwise end up in a landfill, although it is in perfect condition to be eaten.
What it does
Using AI to generate recipes based on user's preferences and the list of foods that they have, and recommend a healthier, more balanced list of either meals or alternative ingredients. Our app has a list of local stores that upload food items that they would either wise throw out so it can be bought at a cheaper price and not wasted. Furthermore, we have food-giving events on the app where the user can reserve a spot and attend to either donate food or take food for themselves, or even both! There are also communities built in the app, and they are made to help certain demographics that need the most help. We offer daily discounts on grocery items and use that to subsidize the cost of maintaining the app. Discounts are a form of advertisement that we can use to not only benefit the user, the company running the promotion, and our production costs. We also have developed a different side of the app, that is for users who themselves have a small business that generates a lot of waste, and they want to either donate it through our events management system or sell it for a discounted price. Using the dataset for inspected restaurants in Calgary, only restaurants that have passed inspections are allowed to sell on our app.
How we built it
We made two versions of the application. For the website, we use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; for the app, we use FlutterFlow, Dart, Flutter, JSON, and Android Studio for testing and further app development.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge we ran into is the time, and learning API keys in order to launch out Ai.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud that we have a working app and website, that were both developed independently from each other and not just converted. Both our Website and App have distinct features. We are proud of what we have accomplished in 24 hours, but with more time we could have finished developing all of our features:)
What we learned
We learning how to manage time efficiently, and most importantly how to be patient and not run out of the room yelling every time we get errors or something doesn't work.
What's next for HealthyYYC
In terms of revenue, we hope to use the coupons page as a way to generate ad revenue to maintain and subsidize the costs of the app, and our user base wants discounts so we expect it to be a hit! We also plan to expand our customer base as much as possible and part of doing that is inviting big brand shops to collaborate with us for not only coupon advertisements but also to give us access to food that they would waste so we can give it to the communities that need it the most!
