Inspiration

Healthcare accessibility remains a critical challenge worldwide. Many people struggle to get timely medical advice, especially in underserved areas or during off-hours. We were inspired to create a solution that combines AI-powered diagnostic assistance with practical pharmacy location services, making healthcare more accessible and immediate for everyone. The goal was to bridge the gap between symptom onset and professional medical care while empowering users with reliable health information.

What it does

Healthwise is a comprehensive AI-powered health platform that provides:

Intelligent Symptom Analysis: Users input their symptoms, age, and duration, and our OpenAI-powered system generates structured medical assessments including primary diagnosis, confidence levels, differential diagnoses, recommended tests, and urgency ratings Smart Pharmacy Finder: GPS-enabled location service that finds nearby pharmacies with real-time data from Google Places API, including ratings, hours, and directions Personalized Health Dashboard: Tracks symptom history, risk assessments, and provides health insights over time Bilingual Support: Full French and English localization for accessibility Secure Authentication: Google OAuth and credential-based login with encrypted user data storage

How we built it

Tech Stack:

Frontend: Next.js 15 with React 19, Tailwind CSS for responsive design Backend: Supabase PostgreSQL database, NextAuth v5 for authentication AI Integration: OpenAI GPT-3.5-turbo for medical analysis with structured JSON responses Maps & Location: Google Maps API and Google Places API for pharmacy discovery Internationalization: Custom React Context system supporting English/French Deployment: Vercel with environment variable management Architecture: Built with server-side rendering, API routes for secure data handling, and client-side components for interactive features. Implemented proper data validation, error handling, and responsive design principles.

Challenges we ran into

Medical AI Accuracy: Crafting precise prompts for OpenAI to generate medically sound, structured diagnoses while maintaining appropriate disclaimers API Integration Complexity: Managing multiple APIs (OpenAI, Google Maps, Google Places) with proper error handling and rate limiting Real-time Location Services: Implementing GPS permission handling and fallback address geocoding for pharmacy finding Internationalization: Building a custom i18n system when next-intl proved incompatible, ensuring medical terminology was accurately translated Data Security: Properly handling sensitive health data with encrypted storage and secure authentication flows State Management: Coordinating complex state between symptom checker, pharmacy finder, and user dashboard components
