Inspiration

The idea for HealthWatch AI came from hearing my brother's struggle to receive adequate medical attention while in prison. Medical neglect in correctional facilities is the norm and often inmates have to resort to submitting multiple medical requests just to be taken seriously. My hope with HealthWatch AI is to bring an end to medical neglect in correctional facilities, so inmates don't have to be close to practically dying to be given adequate care.

What it does

HealthWatch AI is a healthcare management platform designed to prevent the costly consequences of delayed medical care in correctional facilities. By leveraging AI to track and triage health concerns, the system ensures that urgent medical needs are addressed promptly, avoiding the escalating costs that result from neglect.

The platform adds transparency and accountability, incentivizing healthcare staff to act quickly, as delays not only worsen health outcomes but also increase treatment costs. HealthWatch AI helps correctional facilities save money by minimizing the long-term financial burden of untreated conditions, while ensuring inmates receive the care they deserve.

HealthWatch AI could significantly reduce the $8 billion annual cost burden correctional facilities face due to inadequate healthcare. By addressing medical neglect and prioritizing urgent cases, the platform not only improves inmate outcomes but also helps avoid escalating treatment costs from delayed care .

How we built it

We built HealthWatch AI using Next.js for the client-side and Django for the backend. The core of our system leverages NLP and BERT transformers to prioritize medical requests by analyzing the urgency and taking into account preexisting conditions. This allows the platform to triage cases effectively, ensuring inmates receive the most appropriate care based on both immediate needs and their medical history.

Challenges we ran into

Finding accurate data was a major hurdle. The data was hard to find, it was messy and required extensive cleaning and normalization. Also, fine-tuning the AI model presented an additional layer of complexity, as we had to carefully balance accuracy without risking overfitting.

What we learned

Data availability was more challenging than we anticipated. Much of the data we needed was behind paywalls or required official requests, which could take up to a week to process. This limited our access to related healthcare information.

What's next for HealthWatch AI

We want to implement a real-time illness outbreak detection system. This feature would track health trends across correctional facilities, using AI to identify early signs of potential outbreaks or pandemics. By providing immediate alerts, HealthWatch AI could mitigate the spread of contagious illnesses and reduce overall healthcare costs, safeguarding both inmates and staff.
