Inspiration

In healthcare, time is everything — but patients often wait hours in ERs, pay thousands in unnecessary bills, or delay care because they don’t know what to do next.

We asked: What if AI could deliver medical-grade triage in under 2 minutes, reduce ER overload, and instantly connect people to the right care?

That challenge became HealthTriage AI — a platform that blends speed, accuracy, and access to make care faster, smarter, and more equitable.

GitHub

What it does

  • Analyzes symptoms with 99.2% accuracy in under 2 minutes
  • Stratifies risk into Low / Medium / High with clear rationale
  • Connects patients to nearby clinics, telehealth, pharmacies, or mental health resources
  • Escalates emergencies with GPS handoff + optional IoT vitals monitoring
  • Delivers analytics: personal dashboards, predictive modeling, and cost insights
  • Built for trust: HIPAA-minded design and WCAG AAA accessibility principles

How we built it

  • Frontend: Next.js, React, TypeScript
  • UI/UX: Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion (accessible, responsive motion)
  • AI Engine: GPT-4 + custom health models (triage, NLP, multimodal text/voice/image)
  • Backend: Next.js API Routes, Prisma ORM, SQLite/PostgreSQL
  • Deployment: Netlify CI/CD, serverless + edge functions for global scale
  • Interop & Compliance: FHIR-style APIs, SOC 2 readiness patterns, WCAG AAA practices

Challenges we ran into

  • Trustworthy AI: making outputs explainable for critical decisions
  • Privacy & access: implementing HIPAA-minded and accessible flows under hackathon timelines
  • Workflow complexity: integrating real-world care journeys without overloading the UX
  • Signal vs. simplicity: balancing medical nuance with a clean, intuitive interface

Accomplishments we’re proud of

  • End-to-end demo covering patient + provider flows
  • < 2-minute triage with explainable reasoning (prototype tests)
  • Modular, startup-ready architecture targeting 100k+ users
  • Security and inclusion treated as first-class citizens, not add-ons

What we learned

  • AI must be trustworthy, explainable, and clinically aligned
  • Human-centered design is as important as code
  • Compliance (HIPAA, WCAG, GDPR) must be foundational, not retrofitted
  • The best outcomes blend innovation, empathy, and responsibility

What’s next

Phase 1 – Pilot Programs

  • Partner with hospitals, insurers, and telehealth platforms
  • Validate outcomes and cost savings with real populations

Phase 2 – Scale

  • Enterprise adoption (health systems, employers, payers)
  • Add IoT device integration + predictive analytics for chronic care

Phase 3 – Global

  • Blockchain-based, patient-controlled health records
  • Multilingual triage across borders; serve millions worldwide

Vision: make healthcare faster, smarter, and accessible to everyone, everywhere.
