When the four of us decided to form a group for this Hackathon, we were bonded by our newfound passions for computer science, and interests in healthcare. As we discussed potential topics, we started focusing on website ideas that would better the conditions of patients in hospitals. We though about it some more, and realized that while there are websites out there to keep doctors organized, there are none that help patients stay organized. So, we decided to create healthTREK. We also realized that patients often suffer through mental trauma due to the stress they go through while seeking and undergoing treatment. We decided that it would be best if we also included mental health sections in healthTREK.

What it does

We have created a website where patients can organize their notes, goals, achievements, and questions. They can use healthTREK to organize what questions they need to ask each doctor, and take notes of what each doctor said. For example, let’s say that a patient asks their surgeon which antibiotic they need to take. The surgeon will let them know that the infectious disease doctor decides the antibiotics. With healthTREK, the patient can make a note to ask the infectious disease doctor about the antibiotics Patients can also track their moods, log their goals for recovery, and note their achievements throughout the recovery process!

For the mental health segment, we decided to add a mood tracker on the homescreen. There, the user can click on the emotion that he/she is feeling, and get a statement to brighten the user's day. If a user reports feeling a negative emotion for more than 30 days, healthTREK will send the user a notification to visit more resources regarding mental health and how to feel better. We also have an activity page where users can pick an activity they choose to do on that day. There’s a variety of activities that are both indoors and outdoors. Before moving on to the activities, users are given several reminders such as "actions speak louder than words" and that "all bad things come to an end".

How We built it

We used Glitch to collaborate and construct our individual segments. Elise created the homepage, login page, forgot password page, and calendar. Tania created the welcome page, activity page, and "About Us" page. Kayley created the Goals and Achievements page. And Rina created the register page and the notes and questions page.

Challenges We ran into

We had a difficulties trying to work with the JavaScript and CSS since we were trying new things but it made us learn new things. In the beginning, we had a hard time figuring out who should work on what since all our skills are varied but in the end we helped each other out when needed. We also had trouble figuring out how to use cookies to save the user's emotions and login credentials.

Accomplishments that We're proud of

We are very proud that we got to help each other when needed. We were able to use our strengths and craft our project. We solved almost all the problems encountered, and we have come out of the process knowing more than we ever had before.

What We learned

We learned that it's okay to ask for help when you need it. We also learned that we can do more than we ever thought we could!

What's next for healthTREK: Living a Happy, Healthy Life

Some things we would improve on moving forward would definitely be the CSS and the functionality of the website. We want the website to look good to the user and user friendly to the point they want to use it every day! We also want to create a motivational quote generator that gives and inspiration quote to the user. Rather than going through quotes, the user can get one randomly that hopefully brighten up their day. The last thing we would add is a page where the user can contact their primary doctor immediately. It would be linked to their primary doctor’s email and phone number.
