Quarantine has been hard on all of us, and finding the motivation to stay healthy and active isn’t always easy. With that in mind, we designed an app to have a place to keep track of healthy habits like walking and drinking water while incorporating an element of fun! We decided that the easiest way to do that is to associate taking care of yourself with taking care of a virtual pet with benefits that increase as you stay on track with your goals.
What it does
HealthPets creates an interactive way for you to stay on top of your health goals. The user will have a pet to take care of and will log information for their specific health goal. When the user reaches their goal, they are able to see their status on the status bar. They gain points for being consistent with their activity and reaching the goal. The user can gain points every week for their hard work and can then spend their points in the store to purchase items for their pet. It is a way for the user to take care of their pet while reaching their goals.
How we built it
In order to design out prototype, we first listed out all the features we wanted to have implemented. From there, we drafted the order and accessibility of the app. After that, we utilized Proto.io which is a prototype development tool. By utilizing the UI and basic tools, we created the buttons, features, and pages that we wanted to implement into our app design.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges we faced in our app was accessibility and personalization for the user. In order to over come interface issues, we used ways for the user to get notifications, toggle between pages, and to log information. For the issue of personalization, we offered the shop, choice of pet, and choice of goals so they are able to use the app best suitable for them. Another challenge we faced is about how to motivate the user to log information daily. For this problem, we utilized the pet to be taken care of and the point system based on their daily activities. The more they use the app, the more they can help the pet.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As a team competing in a virtual environment, we thought it would be difficult to work on the project. We were happy that we were able to complete our app design with more features in the given time slot amidst our differing schedules. Apart from successfully working as a team, we were able to overcome the learning curve of using an application new to us, Proto.io.
What we learned
Through the development of the design, we learned how to use Proto.io. Additionally, we learned more about collaboration through an online setting.
What's next for HealthPets
For the HealthPets, we hope to implement new features to the interface and we hope that this prototype can be developed into an actual application that can be downloaded by users to be utilized on their devices.
