HealthPath: Our Journey to Inclusive Care

Inspiration

In a world where diversity is our greatest asset, ensuring that everyone has access to healthcare facilities that respect and accommodate their needs is not just important—it's essential. Our inspiration stemmed from the countless stories of individuals facing barriers to healthcare due to physical limitations or discrimination. We envisioned a solution that not only addresses these issues but also champions inclusivity. Thus, "HealthPath" was born, aiming to navigate individuals to hospitals that are welcoming and accessible to all, including those needing wheelchair access and the LGBTQ+ community.

What it does

HealthPath empowers individuals by providing an accessible, easy-to-use map that navigates them to nearby hospitals with inclusive and accommodating features. Our platform stands out by offering:

-Customizable Searches: Users can filter hospitals based on specific needs such as wheelchair accessibility and LGBTQ+ friendliness, ensuring that everyone can find a healthcare facility that respects and meets their unique requirements.

-Efficient Review Summarization: Our app summarizes all reviews of each hospital to provide an efficient one-summary overview of the place, enhancing the user experience and facilitating informed decision-making.

-Real-Time Information: Leveraging up-to-date data, our map shows the most current information about hospital services, accessibility features, and more, helping users make informed healthcare decisions.

-Community-Centric: Our project goes beyond just functionality; it's built on the principle of inclusivity, designed to serve and support underserved communities by providing a tool that acknowledges and caters to their healthcare needs.

By focusing on accessibility and inclusivity, "HealthPath" not only guides users to the right healthcare facilities but also promotes a more understanding and accommodating healthcare environment for everyone.

How we built it

Here's a breakdown of how we created our project:

Leveraging Cohere API for Review Summarization

To enhance user understanding and decision-making, we integrated the Cohere API to summarize reviews of hospitals and healthcare facilities. We have used Python along with Flask to implement it. This feature provides users with concise, insightful summaries of community feedback, highlighting the aspects most relevant to their search criteria.

Integrating Google Maps and Places API

We started by integrating the Google Maps API to display an interactive map and the Google Places API to fetch real-time data on hospitals and healthcare facilities. This allowed us to present users with up-to-date information on locations, services, and accessibility features.

SQLite Database Integration

To manage custom data on wheelchair accessibility and LGBTQ+ friendliness, we implemented an SQLite database. This allowed us to store detailed information about each facility, including user reviews and ratings on inclusivity features.

Developing a Mobile App with React

Our mobile application was developed using React, enabling a responsive, user-friendly interface that works across different devices and platforms. This choice allowed us to create a seamless experience for users looking for healthcare facilities that match their specific needs.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Integrating the Google Places API to fetch real-time data on hospitals posed initial difficulties, especially in handling API requests and managing API keys securely.
  2. Parsing and extracting relevant data from the Google Places API responses required careful handling, given the nested structure of the data.
  3. Ensuring real-time synchronization between the SQLite database and the React frontend was challenging, particularly in displaying updated accessibility information.
  4. Utilizing the Cohere API for summarizing reviews involved understanding the API's capabilities and integrating it into our existing backend logic.
  5. Implementing advanced search filters, such as filtering by wheelchair accessibility and LGBTQ+ friendliness, required complex query logic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Embarking on the "HealthPath" project, we set out to create a platform that would make a tangible difference in how individuals access healthcare facilities. Along the way, we achieved several milestones that we're particularly proud of:

Cohere API Integration for Review Summarization

Integrating the Cohere API to provide users with summarized reviews of healthcare facilities is an innovative feature that sets our platform apart. This functionality offers users a quick and easy way to understand others' experiences, making it easier to choose facilities that meet their needs.

Seamless Integration with Google Places API

Successfully integrating the Google Places API was a significant technical achievement. It allowed us to provide users with real-time data on hospitals, including location, services, and accessibility features. This integration was crucial for our platform's functionality and reliability.

Robust Database with Custom Fields

Creating a comprehensive SQLite database that includes custom fields for wheelchair accessibility and LGBTQ+ friendliness is another accomplishment we celebrate. This database not only supports our platform's core functionality but also represents our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in healthcare.

Intuitive Mobile App Using React

Developing a mobile app with React that offers a seamless and intuitive user experience is something we're particularly proud of. Our app's design and functionality ensure that users can easily navigate through the platform, find the information they need, and make informed decisions about their healthcare.

Advanced Filtering Mechanism

Implementing an advanced filtering mechanism that allows users to search for healthcare facilities based on specific criteria, such as wheelchair accessibility and LGBTQ+ friendliness, is an accomplishment that underscores our dedication to making healthcare accessible to everyone.

Community Impact

Above all, knowing that "HealthPath" can make it easier for individuals to find inclusive and accessible healthcare facilities is the most rewarding aspect of our work.

What we learned

While building "HealthPath," we learned a lot. We figured out how to use different computer programs to make our app work better and talk to other services. We also learned how to organize information so the app can find and show it quickly. Making the app easy to use on phones taught us about designing with users in mind. We used a special tool to make summaries of what people say about hospitals, which helped us understand how to make sense of lots of words quickly. Most importantly, we learned how important it is to make sure everyone can use our app, no matter their needs. We saw how working together and always trying to learn more can help solve problems and make a big difference in helping people find the right hospital.

What's next for HealthPath

For HealthPath, the journey ahead is promising and filled with potential. The next steps involve expanding the platform's database to include more healthcare facilities and additional accessibility features, ensuring broader coverage and more detailed information. Implementing user feedback and review systems will enhance the community-driven aspect, allowing users to share their experiences and contribute to the database's accuracy and richness. Integrating AI for more personalized recommendations based on user preferences and health needs could significantly improve the service's impact. Collaborations with healthcare providers and advocacy groups could further ensure that the platform remains up-to-date and aligned with the needs of diverse communities. Lastly, focusing on scalability and international expansion will bring HealthPath's benefits to a global audience, promoting inclusivity and accessibility in healthcare worldwide.
